Okay, a few questions:
1) When does the ice usually disappear from the UP brookie lakes?
2) Does it take awhile for the fishing to warm up after the last Saturday in April opener or will it be good fishing by then?
3) After the heat of the summer, when does the water temps start dropping and the fishing gets good again for the brookies?
Thanks

Ice is diffrent every year, Superior had ice in it in june a couple years ago so hard to say till we see how warm march is, i would guess sometime in april. I normally don't do good on brookie lakes till the end of may/june and have all but given up on targeting brookies on the opener in the rivers it's just to cold for a few weeks. Spent a lot of time fishing trout lakes during the summer and by far did our best in late june and all of july since it was a cool summer almost all fish came at night, and we did get limits of rainbows and brookies on a few occasions, there is a few pictures in my gallery of some trout we caught during july..

one of the best opening days i had was fishing a small lake near marquette. There was only about 20 foot of open water from shore, we'd cast swedish pimples out onto the ice and drag them over the edge and the fish would hit them right there. Between 3 of us we landed about 30 brookies between 12 and 15 inches and missed many more. Not the big boys but still fun. this was an artificial bait single hook regulation lake. After that day i did not catch another fish out of that lake the rest of the season, those fish are very tough and very spooky. I've been fishing another lake up there and have had fish rising and catching a few and then someone pulls up and parks and slams there trunk and the fish just stop....pretty wild.

Most of the southwestern UP lakes arent froze opening day and can be some of the best fishing for the big boys. There are several nice brookie lakes down by Iron River.
I have caught several over 20" opening day in the trpohy brookie lakes up der eh on flies usually muddler minnows.

Try Dutch Fred LK in Schoolcraft Co, nice brookies in there.
