View Full Version : Thumb Trigger Releases
I am thinking of trying to switch from fingers to a release again, and wondering if anyone hunts with a thumb trigger release. I have tried regular releases in the past with no luck, because I always tend to punch the trigger. I have tried shooting with my eyes closed, and also tried one for several weeks, but still punched the trigger. If anyone has any suggestions for the switch I would appreciate them. I am wondering if the thumb trigger just may be the answer...who knows?!? I am considering getting a new bow this year, and I need to figure this out before I go and get one.

I use to shoot archery in a league. I found that a Carter Rope Release worked very well. I havent shoot in a league for some time but have started useing it in the field. This release has a adjustable trigger and can be set for diffrent applications. I still have it set light but not like when I was trying to hit a paper target.
The unfortunate thing about this is the price. they run some where around $150. If I had to buy one today for hunting I would not buy this unless my budget was unlimited.

I've found, and most others have too, that you punch one release, you will learn to punch them all. Personally, I think you are better off punching a index trigger release, than a thumb release. I shoot a Carter release for target and 3D, and switch to an index for hunting. The reason I do that is I haven't punched my Carter for at least 8-9 years, BUT when hunting there are many times you have to punch your release to shoot a deer. For example, when I'm shooting my Carter I never know when it will go off. Sometimes I'll come to the realization when aiming that it's been too long and I let down. Could go off in 5 seconds, could be 10 seconds. But, when you have a buck walking by at 15 yards on a slow pace between trees, I certainly couldn't wait for the release to go off, so the index trigger is my option...I just squeeze it like a gun when I need it to go off. If the deer is out feeding and I have time to aim I'll use more back tension but the trigger gives me more options when hunting than the thumb. I would never, ever want to make my Carter go off....it's got to be a surprise, has been for many years, and hopefully many more years to come.
But again, usually you punch one release, you punch them all.

I agree with Jeff's observation. Punchy is punchy. Break it sooner rather than later.
BUT when hunting there are many times you have to punch your release to shoot a deer.
Except that part....I prefer to call it a command release. I still shoot a trigger for indoor and not back tension (yet) but it's not a punch either....well usually it's not  Still working on that myself.

kelly,
Yep, I understand what you are saying. I'm thinking more of your "controlled" release, as opposed to a "woops, can't believe I just did that, hope it doesn't hit the neighbor's house" release....big differance!:)
