Help! I do not know where to begin. I have an 18 foot 1997 Lund and the gas or fuel gauge does not work correctly. It will register when filled up but will not register after the tank is under half full. Is this something a fairly decent shade tree mechinac can handle or should I take it to the dealer. I do not want to blow myself up??

Every aluminum tub I have ever had did the same thing. 27 gallon tank reads as empty with 7-8 gallons in it. When it quits registering, I generally take it as a sign to fill up.;) Seriously, you can pull the sending unit (it's the plate on the top of the tank with the wire to the gage attached) and bend the float arm down a little bit, then it will register as full longer, but depending on how far you bend it, a half tank reading could mean 5 gallons in the tank. I see you are in Chesterfield.....5 gallons in the tank doesn't mean a whole lot on LSC unless you like to paddle. I fill up after every trip to keep condensation out of the tank anyhow and with a 200 some mile range fuel isn't and issue. If we are out tubing or whatever and the gage starts moving, I know I'll have to fill up in the next couple hours.

I have a Lund SS Explorer and it does the same thing. Looks empty but I put in only a half tank to top it. Adusting the fuel sender is a possible, but you could set your self up to run out of gas.

I think Lund designs the sender that way to ensure you have gas when you
go for a fill up. It is bad PR to have all those Lunds being towed in.

Thanks guys! I will always fill up the Lund. I can travel anywhere in the lake so a full tank is the way to go. I just thought there could be some easy trick to fixing it.

No easy way. I didn't tell you I work in automotive electronics including fuel gages. I've worked with fuel senders for some time and they are best not screwed with or you do more damage. I think Lund has done this by design to be sure you get back safe. Like I said, bad PR at the dock towin' a Lund in.

I have a 1990 1800 pro-v, and it did that to me as well. I replaced the guage, and the new one does it as well. I have run it dry once or twice because of it, so I really track engine time now instead of the guage. figure about 10% of horsepower in gallons/hour for a carb motor, a little better for injection.
