I receantly got the oppertunity to go on a boar hunt in TN. I want to take one with my bow but only have a 9mm for a side arm. As I have never hunted boar and heard many people say take a side arm with a bow and had people that have hunted boar say thay would not take a 9 What is the most destrutive amo for this and were do I get it:bash:

It will no doubt deliver a killing shot. But what good is a killing shot if it doesn't stop the boar until after he collects HIS trophy (you)? You need to bring a gun that you can shoot well and can stop a boar at close range. I wouldn't use anything less than a .41 or .44 Mag. Just my opinion.

If I were to have only that caliber I would suggest the 147 gr bullets. They will give deeper penetration and good expansion. The Win 147 would be a good one. Should get the job done, with minimal fuss. Rich

9mm is sort of a piddly round against those beasts. I know a guy who was shot three times, twice in the neck and one in the back of the head, and survived. Try that with a .44 mag, even a .357 would be a better choice.

Did I read 9mm and Russian Boar in the same sentence??? I hope you use a sharp broadhead and make a well placed shot! If not, make sure you have a good health insurace policy.....

The only place I would shoot a boar from with a 9mm is the top of a tree!!

9mm is inadequate for Russian Boar. But if you insist, as a defensive side arm, it will not stop a charging boar, you are just out of luck there. As a primary arm, if you have a perfect, close shot and make a good hit, the boar will die eventually. You might want to think about a larger handgun if you are going to carry a sidearm while hunting.

15 or 30rd mag your ready to go to work. Slap em silly with the 147s.

It seems adequate for a human encounters as I read it produces in the mid to high eighties; one shot stops (I prefer .40 and .45 personally). But wild boar at 15 feet? As I said earlier, it will no doubt penetrate and deliver a killing shot if a hit in the vitals is registered. But will it kill in time (or stop) to save ones self from being steam rolled? in my opinion, no. Admittedly, I am not familiar with the skull of a boar so I do not know how thick it is and at what angle the bone mass is structed as this will be over-riding factors as to the effectiveness of a cartridge, especially one with inadequate bullets (non hunting rounds) such as the 9MM.

If 9mm is your only choice, I would go with 147 gr. +P for the deepest penetration. I am not an expert, but most of my research tells me that 9mm is marginal, at best (as is .40 or .45, for that matter). If you are interested in purchasing a sidearm for hunting, choices start at .41 mag and go up from there.

I was speaking of .40 and .45 for human encounters...not the boar. In my original post I recommended the .41 Mag. and the .44 Mag. Just clarifying ;)

I know. That was my not so subtle 9mm vs. .45 plug. ;)

I like 9mm for self-defense, though not for hunting. I'll stick with .454 for that.

We killed a boar several years ago, when it was skinned, we found several 9MM rounds, just under the skin. That is as far as they penetrated. The hides on those critters is incredibly thick...no way would I use a 9 MM.

That nine will be fine for the pigs...

Just make sure to take the front sight off before you go hunting.

That way, it won't hurt as bad when the pig shoves that little pop gun up your ass. :yikes:

I don't think that for a close encounter shot you would have much need for expansion,... I'd stick with the penetration issue.

Go with the heaviest 9mm round you can find in a FMJ,.. you'll want to make sure you get as many penetrating shots as you can get into the head. :D

You don't need a side arm for a back up with a bow. Just take a hunting buddy that you can out run

:yeahthat: like 7MM said as many shots as you can get into the head
Shoot all 10 rounds, run as fast as you can while you pop in another clip, then empty it again.
Good luck, I dont think a 9mm would be suited for this.
You might be better off with a 12lb sledge hammer. :bash:

You might want to eat lots of Onions and Garlic before the hunt as well! That way, if the pig starts chewing on you, there's a chance he might not like the taste!

9MM is better than nothing. Thankfully I have other choices like the 10MM which is my favorite cartridge for close range pig combat. Also my 44 mag for primary weapon applications.
Take the 9mm if thats all you have, but be sure your arrow hits home to ensure you wont need to pull it.
