Has anyone here ever done a conversion on a small (9.9 Merc/Gamefisher) outboard from tiller controlled to wheel? I'm considering doing this to my old Mirrocraft 14ft. I can't get comfortable in my boat the way it is now with the tiller controls. I hate to try and trade motors, but it's an option, my motor isn't that old and I bought it new. There has to be a way to do it with universal type controls, I'm just wondering if anyone else has done this ahead of me and might have some advise.
Any help would be great,
Alan

How much $$$ do you have???
It's possible, but if you are going to buy new, it'll be a pretty penny. You have to get a thottle box, shift and throttle cables, and a steering wheel with something to mount it on...Then you have to install a steering system, either hydrolic (sp) or cable..(which suxs) Might want to hit up a salvage yard or Ebay if you go this way...Boocoo time rigging everything too.
Have you tried a tiller extension on it??? Way cheaper and serves the same purpose.

I just happened to check ebay today and found what looked like allot of good prospects. It might be a fun project, and the ebay stuff would make it pretty cheap too. I need to get the model number off my motor to see if Merc makes brackets that attach to my motor for mounting cables. I plan to make a console if I do this, I made a casting platform a couple years ago for it, and things actually worked out pretty well. I probably wouldn't go with electric start, and would probably go with cable steer, it's only a 9.9 after all.
The shift mechanism would probably be the hardest, especially if I have to make brackets for the motor. I guess I need to do some homework.

lets see a few close-up pics of your motor. so we can see what you are dealing with.

Well, I hopped on the Mercury website and put my model number in to check for parts. It appears they actually sell a conversion kit for my motor. I want to call Merc to see what's included in the kit. I'd then have to figure out what type of throttle/shift controls I'd need. It looks like I could use a basic single cable steer system and get it to work. Now I have to weigh the price vs. the amount of use I get out of the boat, is it worth it??? I'm guessing I'd get a little more use out of the boat if it was a bit more comfortable for me to sit in. I guess I have some thinking to do.
