View Full Version : Why do we fight amongst ourselves???

Traditional v Compound, Selfbow v Laminated..... I am a recurve shooter and it pains me every time I see the bickering between us bowhunters over the equipment we use. Haven't we got enough problems with people (PETA, Humane Society, etc.) wanting to end our sport? Why do you think we have this apparent need to belittle one another over the equipment we use? Some of it is in jest and that's no big deal. But, so much of it is an outright attack. I hate to admit it but it seems the worst perpetrators or those from the so called "traditional" ranks, seemingly thinking they are better just because their equipment may be a bit more difficult to become proficient with initially. None of my hunting buddies shoot traditional equipment and I simply could care less! I am concerned that we are becoming our own worse enemy (as a family of bowhunters) when the real enemy is lurking around the corner waiting to attack after we beat ourselves silly....what are your thoughts? I will agree, and to add to the bashing, I have heard 100s of times the bashing of 3D guys to hunting guys.

The archer who shoots in a 3D tournament bringing his hunting bow compared to competition bows.

I like both and think there is a place for both!!!

My bow is better than your bow...hahahaha :cheeky-sm LOL!

All kidding aside, it's just human nature in todays society I guess....not an excuse and it's not a good reason, just seems that the case and it happens in everything, not just archery.

I can't wait to get back into the traditional gear now that I have a backyard I can shoot in everyday. Before I could not get enough practice in to stay consistant with my recurve. Hopefully I'll be ready by Oct 1st!

I couldn't agree more.

From 3D to indoor to Vegas....from wheels to cams to longbow to recurve...crossbows to rifles to slug guns to buckshot....

If you hunt and aren't a jackass....we're brothers.

I know people I'd rather not associate with that hunt with a long bow or a gun or don't hunt at all.

I don't see why we can't judge a person on their CHARACTER not by what eqipment one uses to take game.

Hunt a pen, hunt free range, from a box or from the ground....I have opinions on how I CHOOSE to hunt but NEVER judge another on their choices.

There are WAY to many other things to fight about....be nice if we all fought for the same cause....the cause of the heritage, tradition, sport and obsession of hunting.

It is not just here. Those who usually are the ones who start the belittling or condeming of anothers choice, are the people who think they are holy'er than thou.

There is no difference in a sportsman attacking another's legal(ethical) equipment, than PETA people complaining about some kid drinking milk.

There may be differences in opinion and that is fine. You follow your way of life, and I will follow mine. Don't push yours on me. If everyone though that way, then we would all get along. No wars, no terrorist, no bickering....

it's not that simple, you do your thing, i'll do mine. what you do in the woods, effects what i do in the woods and vice versa, and effects how our sport or hobbie is preconceived by the public. take me for example, i grouse hunt(with dogs) as much as i can and 90% is done on state land. so, come oct 1st. i know there are going to be a lot of bow hunters out there, do i, hunt whenever i want to, (from dawn till dusk) like you suggest(you do your thing i'll do mine) or think of others that are out in the woods, too. there are a lot of season that overlap and we have to work out these problems, here, in this forum. this is a great forum, and yes, some of the topic's never seem to get resolved but, it never hurts to talk about it. things get a little ugly sometimes, that's the way it is when people have a passion for something. yes, name calling doesn't help, in any way. talking is the answer or we could have a big fist fight, last man standing(or woman, sorry just about forgot you gals), gets to hunt whenever they want and where ever they want.   . just kidding, should say, you listen to my way, i'll listen to your way and will meet in the middle somewhere. happy hunting, brian. p.s. i deer hunt(bow),turkey, grouse, rabbit, yes, even those cute little rabbits, that look like "toby";), pheasant and ducks. didn't want you to think it was a onesided opinion.

Yes, good point. And where I was coming from is that the bow hunter shouldn't be griping about bird hunter. Then it is all good.

Crossbows vs. compounds vs. trad bows , Mathews vs. Hoyt vs. brand X . I get sick of the equipment arguements . If all bowhunters spent more time promoting bowhunting than their choice of equipment , the sport would be a lot stronger agains't the anti's .

It all comes down to respect. Exspecilly in the woods. Treat another hunter or huntress how you would want to be treated.

I think their is nothing wrong about talking about other equipment but it is not cool to push your equipment on me. What works for you might not work or feel good for me.

When comes to bird hunting and bow hunting. Yes, their our seasons that overlap hear in Mi. I am an avid bird hunter and bow hunter. I know that bow hunters are for the most part in the woods until 9 or 10 o'clock and if am not bow hunting than that is when I start bird hunting after that time.

I all have to say be considerate of each other and respect each others opion, you may not agree but do not take it personnel.

The outdoors is all about having fun, it only takes one spoiled apple to ruin a bunch.

I hunt (bow) only private land, so I dont ever come in contact with other hunters, so I guess I am not the best one to voice a opinion about this ( sharing land ) When I do go into the woods(public) to bird hunt, I always look for cars and trucks in the area to see if someone might be hunting, also I dont go untill 10am or so.. as for the equipment argument, its good to have a difference of opinion as long as you are mature about it, this way it will always make things interesting, as to what is new on the market and what works for you maybe it will work for someone else, so I will always welcome a decusion when it comes to what you have and what i have maybe just maybe we could work together to find a happy medium. I know one thing as much as I would like to , i cant try everything out there on the market new and old, so if someone else trys what i cant and they share there knowledge of it with me, i have just become a more educated sportsman

There is a difference between fighting and disagreeing. Bows and arrows, bait fishing, gun caliber and on and on. I think these differences and debates are good even if some have some bad attitudes toward others who don’t agree with them.

Fighting is when one group tries to stop others groups from perusing their sport. A group of people trying to influence the DNR to restrict fishing on certain waters, some rich UP land owner trying to climate the law allowing people to hunt with dogs, the bear hunters association trying to stop a trapping season, groups trying to stop dove hunting, or landowners on lakes trying to impede the state from putting in public boat launches or trying to legally impede access to lakes at public road ends.

It is annoying for people when they proclaim that you might be unethical because you use a sight on your bow or that you use a 12 gage for hunting birds and you hate their arrogance, but that is always going to happen. In the real world we are never all going to get along and agree. There were tens of thousand of people that thought we shouldn’t get into WWII. Hell that debate is still going on in some circles.

My opinion is just like what someone else said. If it’s legal it’s okay and none of your business so shut up. Well maybe they didn’t put it quite that way. lol There have been issues in the past that were legal that called for some action. The one that comes to mind is snagging. I always thought that snagging was a mistake and now I can say I told you so, but that doesn’t happen too often.

I used to shoot my bow in an indoor winter league. Most of the guys used those wimpy little target bows while I used my 90 lb hunting bow. Macho me lol. It was a team league and after me an my good buddy Ken won they changed the rules so we could only use bows up to 70 lbs. Our heavy bows were doing to much damage to the targets ha ha ha. That kind of stuff can tick you off, but it’s not fighting and after we won the next league we asked if they wanted to lower the bow weight to 30 lbs.

We are never going to think alike and there will always be disagreements and I doubt that PETA can make much about them. To the average person PETA looks pretty silly, but that doesn’t mean we should underestimate them and when they do pick a real fight we should use our energy to kick their collective butts.

I couldn't agree more. I don't mind giving or recieving a little poke about the bow I shoot or someone else shoots, but as long as it is all in fun, it's can be fun. But I cannot stand the people who get seriously mad and start attacking people because they shoot a different brand of bow. And if that really does make you mad for some wierd reason, take it out on the anti-hunters :smile-mad.

My experiances have been all positive, I always use my hunting bow @ 3d course. Dont see why anyone would bash it not only are you sighting in and bec oming proficiant with the equipment it most matters with, your not looking like a fag with a purple shiny Hoyt
all kidding aside, :grouphug:

I just have to say whatever way you chose to hunt and feel comfortable with it, Then do it that way. I have hunted with both the long bow and the compound and really don't care what others think about it. I have found that most of the ones that talk, have never even tried the others way. And they don't even have any idea what they are missing.
