We've always mashed bread into a ball and used that as bait, but in a recent outdoor magazine, they recommended using a stick of gum. I'm just curious what others have used as bait for your minnow traps?

I've done the same with the breadball but have found that if I use a hook hanger from a Christmas ornamament (or piece of wire) to hang tha ball so it hangs in the middle of the trap instead of sitting on the bottom, then I get better results. This year I'm also going to put a little tinfoil around the wire hanger to see if that attracts more minnows.

I've had pretty good success with dry cat food. A good proportion is fish meal, and it seems just seems to work better.

Make a thick paste ball out of flour and water. It will stick together and not drift away.
