I'm going to be working in Tawas for the next month or so and I'm wondering what's happening on the river? Sure seems like something should be happening soon. Any help is always appreciated. THANKS.

The river is ice free out to the mouth and fishable. Not much fishing pressure this time of year and certainly no boat traffic. Ice will usually go out near the end of March and trolling for Browns will be the agenda. Last week the lower AuSable was plugged with ice , I may be going there today and will let you know.

Does the river get a run of Steelies in it? If so where would be some good spots to check out? I'll take all of my stuff anyway, the worst that will happen is that I won't catch any thing.(Like that has never happened to any of us before)
The best place to fish steelhead in the Tawas River is behind the county building or the bridge just abovt it.

I fished the AuSable this weekend. It was very difficult due to float ice. Should be cleared up with this warm WX.

John, IMO the Tawas River does not get a big run of steel. The river is fairly slow moving and shallow. The bottom is sand or marl with no gravel runs and limited access. There are a few fish taken, but you may have better sucess trying the AuSable, Rifle or East Branch of the AuGres (ck. for season openers). The AuSable below Foote Dam to the mouth is open year round, has good access and is presently ice free and fishable. The State Dock at Tawas is another place to try as soon as the ice goes out. Hope this helps. P.S. are you coming to work on the new Walmart Store?

I just got home from the new Super Wal-Mart in Tawas. Will be there for about 8 weeks. Thanks for the the river choices I'll have to check some of them out. Do guys bobber fish the Tawas River? How about the walleyes? We fished the bay this week for them after work, no eyes but three nice lakers. It was sad to see them slip back into the water though. We'll try again next week.
