While out at the Salt river, a nice 40" musky came swimming by. He was going so slow, it took about 10 seconds to completely pass thru.

Took me about 5 seconds to determine if it was a pike or musky. It was cruising right along a foot from the bottom.

I really could have nailed it, but ESOX would have come looking for my hide. :yikes:
What on earth would I want some wrinkled old skin for?
I know for certain it is simple to tell a muskie from a pike even from a distance in open water just due to the way muskie "shimmer", besides their obviously wider shoulders in relation to girth when viewed from above. (Meaning the thickness of them right behind the gill plate realtive to a pike of the same length.) Having only seen portions of muskie under the ice at once, dont they tend to look a lot lighter in color than pike? I know the times I have seen them under the ice they almost shone. Hardly a good basis upon which to make a positive ID but your keen, very expierenced eye must know the difference between the to easily in decent light. What are the keys to look for under the ice?

Iam seeing a musky every day at selfridge. Friday one came in layed on the bottom right under my holes looked to be about 3ft. Also had a lamprey on it iam sure it was a lamprey. Have caught salmon with lamprey on them looked the same. I thought lamprey only attached to salmon.

Pike seem to be a darker color (green). I was trying to look at its sides for positive identification. You know those green and white lateral spots. Looked more like a plain side so I layed off. Kinda like not shooting at anything that moves while deer hunting thinking it "might" be a deer. I for one need to see for sure what I am "shooting".

Yesterday out at the mile roads . I had one sky come in. It's head was the size of my 10" hole. It looked like a person swimming down there. too cool ..biggest I've seen in photos or live
