I was out this past sat. evening trying to get 10 or so gill to fill up my gill chowder that I was making for Superbowl Sunday. Met my friend out there about an hour before sundown. The bite was hot on this small pond when we got there and found out what color. We both put on a orange with black tear drop and started catching them one after the other with about every third one being a keeper.

My buddy hooked up to a larger gill and had it about half way up then the line snapped. I joked and told him that as long as I have the same color on I'll get his hook back shortly. We were sitting about 6 feet apart. About 5 minutes goes by and WHAM. It's another nice one. I get it out of the hole, and it's about 7 1/2". But wait there's another line sticking out of it's mouth. After peering down it's gullet, there it is, his hook that he just lost to this fish. We ended up with about 15 nice gills and left at dark.

Just thought I'd share that with you all.

I did the same thing fishing for browns one night on a favorite creek. My uncle was upstream of me about 30 yards and hooked into a descent brown. His line snapped and away swam the fish. About 10 minutes later I hooked into a descent fish and managed to land it. As I hauled it onto the bank my hook popped out. When I picked up the fish I noticed that there was a hook and crawler still in his mouth and thought, "Dang it now I gotta tie on another hook!" When I looked at my line the hook was still there.....2 full crawlers and a hook in the jaw, he was a hungry one...oh it was about a 15 inch fish too!!

Had the same thing happen on murray lake in kent county last year, my freind hooked and lost it the day before, whats the chances we were in 34ft water and the fish were suspended.

Kinda puts all the theories about fish not biting for a day or two after being hooked out of whack. I once landed a 15" largemouth out of a small pond a few years back...Due to its swallowing of the hook, I cut the line and sent it on its way. One hour later, I caught the same fish, with my other hook in its mouth and the same scar by its tail... :yikes:

Oh yeah. I can remember when I was little going out to the end of the dock at my Grandmas house. I could spend quite a bit of time catching the same 2 or 3 sunfish that happened to be right down below. Put a nice juicy worm in front of their faces and they quickly forget what happened the last time they tried.

Those are great stories, thanks for sharing. I have a somewhat similar story, with a lil twist. My roommate and I were were in our 12-foot John boat on Elizabeth Lake (Waterford) having a "bass tournament" against two other friends one early morning. We were both using top-water plugs (our secret lures we wouldn't tell them about, lol) while they were jigging crawlers and tubes. About an hour and a half goes by and we are slammin em (small mouths). But then, my roommate lost his plug somehow on a cast or it just snapped trying to "work" the lure. We were really bummed, looking all over for it cuz it was the HOT color (and our last one). After doing 7 or 8 circles in the vicinity trying to locate it on top of the water (floater) we gave up.

We met up after a while to talk about our success, but continued fishing. About a minute later, we hear, "what the hell is this? Hey, did you guys lose a lure"? One of our other buddies (on the other boat) managed to cast right on top of it and reel it in. Insane, how his cast hooked up with the treble hook from his tube jig. Maybe the line sat on top of it, or he just landed right on it, whatever.... it was a freak moment... ...and they found out our secret. :bash: ;)

i gut hooked a small bass in a pond once fishing minnow/bobber and instead of trying to get my hook out i just snipped the line at the eye and released him. There was little more than the eye of the hook exposed from the gullet. about 30 min later i caught him again, this time he was hooked through the eye of the previous hook i cut off, like a stinger hook.

I was the other guy in jigawhat's story, lol. The one who didn't tie it on right or something. But there is lot's of stories about me and knots.

Anywhoo-I was once upnorth at a buddies cabin. Me and another guy decided to go fishing in this small pond behind my buddies cabin(cure the hangover of course). Before we left my buddy gave us some rods(didn't plan on fishing that weekend) reels and tackle. He said "whatever you do don't loose this lure" Sure enough the first fish I hooked into SNAP the line comes flying back to me. It was a nice large mouth. Thinking great I just lost my buddies favorite lure. Then about 20 minutes goes by and a few hundred yards later I see a lilly pad moving around violently in the water. We paddled over and there is the nice sized bass stuck to the root of the lilly pad. We had to reach down about 3 feet and got the lure back. I'll never forget that!!!

years ago on the ausable river cooks pond, i was fishing and caught this hammer handle pike. unhook um and throw it back. a couple hours later i catch him again. so in my t-box i take out my emergency britches safty pin, and pinned it under it's chin and let it go. the next summer my cousen and i are fishing a mile away down by the dam, and he yells over to me to see strange fish he just caught. low a behold theres that pike with the pin in it's chin, it added about 3-4 inches and a had another hook stuck in it's mouth! ahh! the benefits of catch and release:grouphug:
