View Full Version : SANG this AM 2/9, 6:45-8:45
first crack at the early bite this year...normally do the late bite
got out and set up in the pitch black...didnt really expect a bite that far in front of the sunrise, but at 6:45 they were biting...put 5 , 8"ers in the bucket in the first 5 minutes....ended up with 16 (7-8's, no hogs) of which 13 were caught before sunup, and only 3 once i could see bottom
im workin on a theory based on this outing...i think i should have been set up at 5:45 instead of 6:45...ive got a suspicion that the hogs are biting way before sunrise...gonna see if it works tomorrow
straight out of the launch and to the left of that permanent hot rod shanty...maybe 1/4-1/3 mi from shore
caught em on the rig
koby
Hey Koby ,about a week ago was set up and lines in by 6:15 with the same results as you.About 15-20 ,8"-10"ers.As soon as 8:30 came they shut off.Jiggin raps, kens with red jensen egg.It is so nice and quite in the early A.M..It would be nice to be set up about an hour earlier and see what comes of it,who knows.
mwp
im just racking my brain, trying to figure out the secret...theres gotta be a way to get em because i know theyre there
i keep thinking how easy it was last year about this time...id go out basically whenever in the afternoon, not try very hard, and come back with at least 35-40 and they were all over 8"...you would get flurries of activity throughout the day and it kept you on your toes
ive been out a dozen times in the last few weeks and have yet to see ANY schools of perch, except RIGHT at dark...im especially intrigued by the lack of any schools of large perch-ive only seen them come in one or two at a time
ill get out there at 3:30, thinking "todays the day" and it has yet to happen
maybe the big fish are 3 miles out-maybe theyre right up against the shore..dont know yet, but ill be sure to let everyone here know if i find them with any consistency
koby
kOBY,
The same exact thing here.Last year as well as in years past,I would always come back with at least a couple of meals worth. This year cotton road, fairhaven, selfridge, ginos, and south river, all over you really have to work for them and not as many fish or the size. The first week in Feb.last year I marked down I was really catching some fish with size as well,NADA this year.Although did do decent in the rain on Mon.Like you said though it was right at dark.Pm me i f ya wanna go and we can tag team them.

I caught them real well after dark about a week ago. All large fish. No jigging /movement of bait on spring bobber rig - minnows.

Last spring I got out real early one day and was set up with a big spearing hole from the day before. It was long before dark. As soon as I closed up the shanty and looked into the hole I could see perch sitting there on the bottom doing nothing with my flashlight. Even setting up the shanty had'nt chased them away. I tried everything....they would'nt bite until a little later and of course they hit real good for the early bite. I'm just trying to say that it looks like there is such a thing as too early. And I've also found out what was already said is true about after dark they only hit minnows sitting still. Go figure.....

Superbowl Sunday I was the first person on the ice out of SANG. Set up in front of the barracks a good 3/4 mile off shore. The only keeper I got was at 6:45 while it was still dark. Perch feed by sight so I didn't think I would really catch anything at this time. I was getting a lot of bites at this time but the rest were all dinks. When I could see down the hole it was just loaded with small perch and a few lost keepers that never even gave me enough time to force feed them with the spear. Alot of people were fishing further South down by the big flag pole and in close to shore. That day I never tried in close to shore. Instead, I stated out past the pack, but didn't have any luck. Does anyone know if the fishing was better close to shore?

Is there someone in the booth to pay to park that early at SANG? And, has anyone ever tried to put a light down the hole like crappie fishing?
Just wondering....
well guys, i gotta tell ya my hunch was right...theyre biting REAL early
got set up at 3:45 this morning...it was the most amazing thing ive ever experienced
it was non stop action all the way to 6:00...ended up having to cull the 9 inchers in favor of 10s, then culled all the 10s for 12s
ran out of wigglers in and hour so i ended up switching to a Magnum Rat-L-Trap, that i modified for vertical jigging and had painted neon pink...once i switched to that the real action began
from 4:45 to 5:45, i put 44, 14+" monsters in the bucket and culled out the rest of the 12's...they were just creaming that Rat-L-Trap like it was their Last Supper
totaled em up and blew out at 6:15...44 SUPERHOGS 14-16"
i was so excited, fired up and tired at the same time that i rushed home in time to show the wife my amazing catch before she headed to work....but when i went to get the bucket out of the trunk to show her, it was missing...holy **** i left it in the parking lot!!!
if anyone found a bucket full of hogs at the launch this morning...when you take em home just remeber who caught em
just kidding!!!

I would assume its all a joke...Can't picture anyone getting so many 14 + that you would have to throw back the 12 inch guys...but you never know I guess

He may have been stretching the truth a bit, I could only fit 40, 14"s in my bucket. Maybe he had a "6 gallon" bucket. ;)

Just drove by SANG on my home. Guys are setting up tents to camp out for the night in the parking lot. It's strange. They're all talking about this mysterious bucket full of wallhangers, and the only way to get em is with rat l traps and be the first one on the ice.
