Went out yesterday afternoon. It was not a fun walk at all I almost ate it a few times. I set my tip up and got a flag 5 minutes later, when I checked it there was about 20 ft. of line out and the shiner had scales falling off. This happend 4 more times over the next half hour, finally I just sat by the tip up and waited for it. As soon as it went off I set the hook and pulled up this hammer handle

After that I went and sat in the shanty for awhile I had a nice bass and a decent pike in the hole. After that I took the portable down behind the island for some panfish action. Before I went to the lake I stopped by Bass Pro and picked up somesize 12 egg hooks and 1/65 bullet weights. I put the hook on and the weight about a foot and a half above the hook and then put a couple spike on the hook and then pasically let it freefall down tto the bottom and when it got down I'd pull it back up and do the same thing. I caught a ton of dinks and about 5 hog gills and missed a few slabs. I was really happy because we've been trying just about everything to catch these fish and nothing has been working. So hopefully next time I'll refine it and catch a few more. Other than having no one else there to fish wit hand being bored out of my mind, it was a pretty good night. :)

I hear ya about falling down. I was on the ice on monday night and really wished I'd had my corkers. Hopefully this little bit of snow provides some traction on top of the ice. It's funny, in the spring and summer you can catch gills constantly, but to me they're a mystery in the winter

Yeah on our lake you don't see very many dinks, most of the fish you see are hogs and they'll come up within an inch of your rig and then slowly turn and swim away. With the egg hook and spikes they were flying in and inhaling it right away. The only thing is you have to be sight fishing with that set-up.

I don't know if I'd want to get in a shanty with you? Your picture scares me a little bit:yikes: . Nice post about letting the bait fall down. I am going to try that tonight. I have not tried wax worms or spikes yet this year. Is that the key to crappie and blue gill? We have caught a few crappie on walleye minnows but not nearly as much as we would like.

Use the spikes, we haven't done anything with wax worms this year. Put 2-3 spikes on the hook, and keep the hook tip covered.

I'm gonna keep an eye out for those, some guys last week got some slabs on a tear drop they said had "spinny things" on it.
