O.K., we all know that Michigan is known as the "wolverine state" (personally, I think it should be renamed "The spartan state", but that is another topic:D ). However, I have been told that Michigan never, EVER had any wolverines in it's bounderies.....the whole idea that MI was had a heavy population of wolverines came when traders saw huge amounts of pelts on the docks at Ft.Detroit and assumed that they came from the area, when accutally they had been bartered for from Native Americans in Canada. CAn anyone substantiate this? can anyone prove that wolverines poulated MI at one time, either through fossil evidence, exhumed bones, siteings, ect.?

Ive heard that there were wolverines in the U.P. but not the lower penninsula and Ive also heard the state got its nickname because when we were at war with Ohio over Toledo they said the people from Michigan fought like wolverines, dont know if the last part is true or not though.
