I've struggled off and on all winter like most everyone else here. I have finally discovered the best ice fishing I've had in years. Mudpuppies! Fellas I'm telling you the exhileration of pulling a good limit of Mudpuppies beats the pants off of catching dink perch. And if you think perch fillets are good you ought to try deep fried Mudpuppy tail. It's delicious. I'm pretty excited about all this rain, the water is going to warm up a little and get the Puppies active. Good luck out there, save a few for me.

you can keep the Canadian mud puppies that wander into American waters . the only way to tell if a Canadian mud puppie is they don't put up a fight.  Kidding to all my Canadian brothers. All mud puppies are protected.

So are mudpuppies actually protected, or are you guys just talking about this time of year, because according to the fishing guide, there is a mud puppy season with a possession limit of 10.

Only time I touch them is to unhook them and toss'm back in. When I lived in Colorado few years back, used them critters for pike bait.

Ed, where abouts are you at in PH? I live near 10th Ave and Garfield.
My usually recipe for 'rats is to fry them like rabbit. You must soak them over night in salt water, unless you like your food to have a muddy flavor. Little ones (1 -2yr) are best, older 'rats are tough, but they can be stewed.
