I am planning to do an early spring boar hunt with my bow. Has anyone ever shot a boar with their bow? What broadheads would work best?

I've shot lots of pigs. Use whatever broadhead you use for deer. Make sure they are very sharp, and dont hit them in the shoulder. Pigs are tough animals, but arrows pass through with no problem. Good luck!!
I've never shot a pig, but a buddy of mine had a video that was pretty entertaining. It shows the importance of shot placement on those nasty little devils. They came across this hog on a small hill and the guy must have hit the shoulder. That hog charged the guy like some crazed demon. The guy was lucky enough to have a tree branch close by to grab and swing out of the charging hog's way. That hog came within inches of geting his vengeance. If that hunter didn't have that branch, he would have had a NASTY gash on his leg.
From what I could gather from the video, you only have a 6-8" circle to make a good shot or you run the risk of pissing one of them off severly. I would like to go on a hog hunt, but am unable to spend the money. I've seen some of those hog hunts that have them on some 40 acre lot, but thqt doesn't really appeal to me. I would like to take one with a bow. I heard they taste really nice.

I'm going on one this Sunday. I plan on using 75 grain Rocket Ultimate Steel on them. That's what I used for deer last season....those and Rocket Mechanicals but there's a "Fixed blade only" rule where I'm going so.
I'll let you know how they perform. ;)

a good friend from tennesee has a tape of his friend hunting hogs with a bow.
lol,he shot that hog and chased him and shot him some more,,, he ran out of arrows. they actually have video of him reaching over a log and pulling arrows out of the hog so he could shoot it some more. i about wet myself laughing.
this was a tape they were making to promote their guide service for hog hunting,so they actually are good hunters. in fact both of them make custom knives, and have each taken a boar with their own knives. (can we say "tennesee mountain men"?)
needless to say that got edited out of the finnished tape.but it shows just how much trouble a pig can give even an experianced hunter at times.

I have taken 1 hog with a bow. I used a Rocky Mountain Supreme broadhead. Placement is the key like the others have mentioned. Mine went about 75 yards and piled up. Another guy in camp shot one many, many, many times. It finally had to be finished with a handgun. His first shot was off and all his others were at a moving pig.

Most reputable places won't let you use mechanical broadheads. Even if your place would allow it, heed the concensus on this one. Hogs and expanding blades don't mix.
Follow the rules and you'll be fine...
- Prefer cut on contact tip,.020 blades or better
- 3:1 length to diameter ratio
- flies well from your bow
- sharper than hell
- take NOTHING but complete broadside shots
Have fun.

I have hunted boars 5 times and you'll find out that they are some very tuff animals. and MEAN!!!. you'll need to make sure you have a good set up w/ some broad heads that will penetrate some tough material. there bones are like steel. very thick. like a bears. I use 125 grn. titaniums. We go to the Hog Wild Ranch in North Land,Mi. its in th UP. about an hour north of escanaba off co426. we went for a 2 day hunt. I think it cost us like $450.00. lodging and meals were included. they do have a web site. will find out what the address is. you want some good kinetic energy to take one of those beasts down. we had a couple of guys in a group not set up very well. ended up having to put the animal down w/ his shot gun. it was funny. they were running around like chickens when it would make a half attempt to charge. I guess really not that funny. had one tree me for a half hour till he finally expired. that was 2 years ago. but what a rush. they have some real bruisers at that ranch.

Yeah....I did. I don't know how much "luck" was involved but we all got hogs and had a blast doing it.
Our ranch owner had a "No Mechanicals on Hogs" rule. He shoots elk and whitetails with Rocket expandables himself. He has no issue with them per se....they just don't work on pigs.
I used Cabelas Lazer Pros and hey worked very well. Basically look like a Muzzy/Innerloc/Thunderhead type of head. 3 blade trocar tip and replacable razor blades.
I had no problem passing through with my setup.
Steelforce or a Magnus Stinger would be my first choice next time. The bigger the better and from what I saw....I may actually prefer to have the head STAY in the hog instead of passing through.
