Theres been allot of talk of changing the hooks on your jigs and lures to red. Everybodys doing it! Well maybe its good, maybe its not. Everyone is looking for a place to buy them and then theres the problem of different sizes. In stead of this hassle of SHOPPING heres a solution. Go to PRODUCTION TOOL COMPANY or such a retailer that deals with the machining industry and buy a bottle of Dykem Layout Fluid. It comes in several colors, red being one, also in small bottles. Just dip your hooks and presto RED HOOKS. This is a dye so be careful if you do this on the kitchen table. I've done this and it works. It dries fast and I find it to be durable.

Why not just buy the red gamastu hooks or the red vmc they are a superior hook anyway. I don't understand people spend all that money on gas, bait, tackle and then skimp on the hooks or line afterall it's the only connection between you and the fish

Thanks for the tip pappy!Yes! Thanks! This would be a great alternative to "switching" all my hooks!
Great idea. I was thinking about painting the hooks on my muskie plugs, they dont seem to make red 4/0 trebles.

I buy those high end hooks at times, but I also buy hooks in bulk by Eagle claw etc that are much less exspensive.
If your line is 4 pound 6 or 8, how strong does the hook really have to be?
Besides some here might like the idea of custom coloring their hooks.
Keep'm sharp whatever brand you use!

I did not say anything about strength, the gap, hook points and temper are superior. Yeah, if you don't want to spend the money for a better hook why not die them. :D

Are there any stats that show an increase in catch?
Do they really make a difference?
Can the fish see the red hook when they are covered with a waxie?

Zakker,
I am going to respond for Icepappy since he is my dad, and I am the one that bought the dye...LOL. Prodution Tool is a retail/wholesale store that supplies tools and materials for machining shops. It is in Jackson, just off I-94, Airport Rd. exit. But I would imagine that you could find this dye in any similar retail store. Check your phone book.
I bought the small (4oz) container and pulled off the felt cap. That is so the tube can be used like a liquid marker. I didnt' think that would suit the small hooks very well. Anyway, I dipped my hooks in the dye. Suprisingly it only takes seconds for that stuff to dry. I also take it out on the ice with me. And rather than take the whole bottle with me (not sure what the freezing point of this stuff is), I filled a glass "contact lens" bottle with the dye. The small container packs easy, and if it freezes I'm not out anything.
Hope this helps,

Grainger's also carries it....I sent one of my employees to get me some....He came back with BLUE......Well maybe next year ;)

Thx guys, I'll have to get on it. I bought some red hooks off ebay last spring (at a very low price) and I think that is how they did it. It starts to wear off after a while but being it is so easy to re-dip, what the heck. That's the way I am going to head. Thanks again.

Does anyone know of a place in the Ann Arbor area where I can buy this or something similar? Looks like the nearest Production Tool Supply is either in Jackson or Novi. I have to believe there's someplace closer than that. Thanks for your help.

Too many people are getting way too excited about red hooks. Keep in mind that red is the first color to dissapear in the color spectrum as you go deeper into the water. Red dissapears at about 10 feet, becoming bascially the color of any normal fish hook. So the red is having no effect if your fishing your bait more then about 10 feet down. If you don't believe me go to the deep end of a swimming pool and let something red sink to the bottom. By the time it reaches the bottom it wont be red anymore ;).

I don't see the down side of disappearing hooks past 10 feet. Makes sense if you ask me. I have been using red hooks on perch this year at depths to 40 feet and feel that I have outfished other colors 2 to 1....
