Ok, so I had this idea for bringing the crappie in to my hole at night. It is kinda hard to explain, but let me know what you guys think.

Well, I am combining two basic ideas. I have heard of people putting minnows in a big glass pickle jar, and lowering it down the hole to attract fish. I have also heard of people using a light at night to attract fish. I want to do both. I dont want to but an expensive underwater light, so I thought I would try this. I have some LED lights. White, red, and blue. I want to put one in a small jar, like a baby food jar. I will water seal that. Then, I will fill a pickle jar with minnows and water. Put the water tight baby food jar in there, and lower the entire apparatus down the hole.

The question is if this will work. I am willing to try, but what color light should I use?

I've used the newer style car headlight bulbs and sealed them in a small jar, then used weights to lower the light below the ice. I found that it attracted more crappies when the light was closer to the surface than it did several feet down.

I'm not sure if the jar full of minnows is nessary, the light will attract minnows by itself. Good luck!

I'd have to say that Walleyvision is right. The light alone will attract the minnows which will in turn attract the Crappie. I think your best bet is just white light.

The light from my lantern works just fine for me. I've even had crappie grap dead minnows floating in my fishing hole :D

I am also looking to do some night crappie fishing. How is this light powered? Most "fishing" lights are 12 volts. I bought one to use smelt fishing on Higgins Lake with. I plan on using my Coleman 12 volt "jumper/power" box I got for Xmas last year, even run my "flasher" (Lowrance; "Little Green Box") off of it!

These "jumper" boxes are now made by variaty of different company's and are getting pretty reasonably priced, I've seen them as cheap as $29.99! Pretty slick portable source of 12 volt power!
