Sunday morning, son and I picked up 4 lakers(he caught them all, 9 year old). Biggest was 25 inches-smallest was 20 inches. All caught on tipups, depth was around 80-90. Lost only one. No luck on whitefish. Great weekend and weather out there. Saturday we tried jigging and for whitefish-no luck. Sat. night smelt were steady but slow-was NOT at smeltville but another location on the north end, lots down there just slow on the bite. Report was perch were small.http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/533/1051DSC00437-med.JPG[/IMG]

And yes the perch were small , steady but small.
I told my bro that it was about time to give the trout a shot.
Now you've convinced me. Nice catch & congrats to your son, he's gotta be hooked after that ;)

Laker fishing is for the most part a morning fishery but the best bites seem to come from 8:00-10:00am, with the 9am feeding bell the most productive, at least for me and what I've seen. Evening can be OK as well. I've got a number of PM's asking how to fish them and of course where. The where part is easy-Higgins Lake and 85-110 feet of water  sorry but its getting crowded out there!!! How is easy too-tipup 2-10 feet from bottom grey/smelt for bait hooked in the dorsal area with a treble hook. Some guys place the bait right on bottom with a slip sinker rig and some jig.

I fished for perch on Higgins Saturday afternoon and could not get that was larger than my beer can. I pulled in about 25-30 of these minnows in just a couple of hours but where are the big ones?
