The guy at Gander Mt. said there is 4" of ice and the visibility in the water is less than a foot. No fish due to the cloudy water. In this snow that is way too far for this aging man to walk.

Drove out to Hickory Island yesterday evening about 5 or so. Lots of shanties on the Bay. Don;t know if anyone was catching but there were quite a few shanties out there. Going to give it a go with Bolodunn later today and see what we can find.

Fished yesterday and didn't get a bite. Bolodunn and his son went with me and they had the same lack of luck as I did. Talked to several people and it was the same all over the bay. Water was extremely cloudy and I think that had a lot to do with it. Fished there a lot last year and never got skunked like that. Once the water clears we should be good to go.
I did talk to one guy, turned out to be my daughter's best friends father (Everyone got that? :D ) He has a permanent he put out on Friday, they started fishing yesterday morning and by the time I left with Bolodunn they had a total of 5 fish in the bucket. Only good news about that is they were all jumbos. Not one under 11" and a nice 13". All fish were fat as can be.

Where are you parking to get out on the ice?
I've heard alot about this place but I'd rather not risk a ticket to fish.
Any help would be great.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Is it a long walk, or is it just that you risk getting the ticket by parking somewhere you probably shouldn't?

From the Yacht Club it's a good mile to fishable water. You park outside the gate and you will see the path that all the ice fisherman have made to the canal. Cross the canal and you can cut across that island right there.

I must stress this. If there is no parking outside the yacht club, drop your stuff off and go find a LEGAL parking spot on one of the streets right there. When I drove by the other day a truck, obviously an ice fisherman, was parked right on the road. Too much of this type of behavior and we as ice fisherman are going to find ourselves banned from parking at all in this area. The next step after tickets is towing. I have talked to the police out there as I came off the ice and he was writing tickets, they don't have a problem with us parking there as long as it's done legally. Not trying to get on anyones case, just feel like that should be said about this wonderful fishing spot, that I for one do not want to lose.

i agree i have been fishing there for 25 years and that would suck if we could not get out there because of stupid people with no respect. alot of people talk about the perch fishing at lsc this spot is prime jumbo area second to none.

Guess you've never been to the Bananna Dyke

Where is Bananna Dyke? Also is Airport bay on Grosse Isle? I have been living on the West side for approx 6 yrs, (Southfield and Outer Dr) and do not know of any places to ice fish in this side of town for perch. I have been going out to Geno's, Metro, and Venetian Canal. It would be great to find a spot closer to home(More time to fish).

Any tips would be appreciated.

How wide is the path???? Can I drag a shappell 3000 on skis?????

jimhx720

The path is fairly wide. I drag my Eskimo Traveler through it with room to spare. Even if the path isn't wide enough, just follow the canal to the left and it will wind around the island, just a little longer walk is all. :)

It is Point Mouliee(or however you spell it) about 3 miles from the Entrance ofthe Detroit river, you just go from Bottom line south down West Jefferson about 3 miles until you get to this Old, crusty, abandant party store on a dirt road......and, you go down that until you see the yellow fence, park, and perpare for a 4 mile hike down to the North end for some HAWG perch.

Anyone been out to the bay this week? Just wondering what the water clarity is like right now.

That walk out to the Dyke is a killer. I honestly think the fishing is better in Airport Bay without the 6-mile round trip hike.

LOL, well, i think there is another road that would cut it done to maybe 3...but, it is very flat and a nicely paved road....usually tkaes about 45 minutes...faster if you are riding a bike.

This is true, but, you won't have to drive an hour to find a parking place, and, there are no houses around, so, no arrogant people shouting at you if you park in front of their house, or anywhere within 100 yards of their house....But, the fishing can be great in both areas....the Dyke can also be good for eyes and an occasionally steelie.

Was out on in the Bay today about 5 hrs, and not a thing. Moved quite a bit and still nothing. Water was still pretty cloudy. People we talked to had about the same to say.

Is this area accessible by Quad, I have a small 125 with racks and hitch to haul my gear out, would be great to drive it out there from the truck vs the 3 mile walk.

No quads can operate there, if you can ride it on the ice all the way around you may be ok.

No motorized vehicles allowed....it makes it pleasant without all the noise that quads and snow Mobiles makes....i think you can go around through the entrance...but, at own risk...it is lake erie near the Detroit River.

I dont want to sound like a jerk but i thought it was only about 2 miles from sigler rd or from the road behind the quarry. I have been hunting and fishing out there for years and only live 5 min from there. If you have a quad or snowmobile drop it off on the creek by the quarry and ride all the way around the dyke until you get to back of the bananna, park and climb over the rocks. You wont go through the ice because as long as you stay close to the dyke it is only 2 feet deep maximum beside the creek is a little deeper. You can legeally drive through the mouth into the fishing area if you want to risk it. I have done it before but there is usually a pressure crack between 1-3 feet wide depending on wind. Otherwise you can walk and be there in about 45 min carrying gear. Also now is not the time but when there is no snow on the dyke you are looking at a 15min bikeride. Also Dont ever park and take a quad or sled from the DNR office no matter what anyone says. When you cross the huron river you might not see your machine again. Seen that happen about a few years back. Also you have to pay to have it pulled out and a fine for contamination of the water. Good luck i havent fished the bananna since they hav screwed with it last year. MIght try it out there or airport bay this weekend i will let you know what happens.

And last Let me try to make myslef clear. YOu cant operate a sled/quad on the dykes or the ice within the dykes (long pond, vermet until, lead unit ect.)There will be signs posted at the lot where you cant operate you vehicle. But you are free anywhere on the lake outside the dykes and within the bananna. There has been alot of controvery over the years about being able to go inside the dyke with a sled/quad and it is leagal if you access it through the mouth"hole in the wall". I know several of the DNR Officers out there and like they said if you couldnt take a sled/quad out there then people wouldnt be able to take boats in there like they do all summer.

snowmobiler7c,, when you say DNR station, do you mean the Mouillee game area?? Does that part of the river just "not" freeze"?

snowmobiler7c
01-28-2005, 01:17 PM
The whole thing is the mouillee game area. I am talking the office off campau road where the boat launch and parking area is. Yes it does freeze over but is rarely ever safe to travel over with a vehicle.

I printed a pointe Mouille state game area map from dnr and was wondering a good start point on the map.

North end of the dyke?

Can you park at the office and wlk across the ice there?

so where do you fish on the inside of the dyke or the outside on the lake?
Also what is a good starting depth?
