View Full Version : Used My New Ice Saw Today

Got to use my new ice saw today. Went out about 200 yards in front of Brandenburg Park. Ice was 6 inches thick but the water visibility was only 2 feet. I was impressed with my hand saw because I made a 2 foot X 3 foot hole in only 5 minutes. This saw only has 9 teeth but they are dangerously sharp. When not in use, I keep them covered with a piece of garden hose slit lengthways. Any ways, the fishing was slow. My grandson caught 3 dink perch - we quit after 1 1/2 hours. Marked the shanty hole and left pleased with my ice saw results. :)

Thats great to hear! Mine came a couple weeks ago and I've been dying to try it out.....got it on ebay for $90 including shipping...sounds like the same thing. What a nasty blade huh? Jeez....its scarey! Hoping to get out in a few days when my health gets a bit better.....
Thats a great idea to put a piece of hose over the blade. Thanks for the idea.

If your saws have a hole near the end of the handle it's a good idea to tie a loop of line through the hole (as you would on a spud). It wouldn't be too hard to loose one.

please mark the big holes you cut too.. .....sometimes a smaller hole is better than a big one for sight fishing. (although you probably werent sight fishin with that clarity.)..... mark the big holes so no one gets hurt !

Royal Whaler, thanks for the info. I know a few members here that have been wondering how those things work. Your post about how it works is the first I've seen since I became a member.
Last question, that I haven't seen an answer to yet: How do you start the cut? Last I heard, was that you had to cut 4 corners with a small auger, then saw out the square. Thanks for the input............Joe

Using auger holes would work OK. The suggested method to start a hole with the ice saw is to start chipping a hole with the pointed end. This tapered, sharp pointed end took about 15 strokes to break through to the water. From that point on a sawing motion cuts through the ice. At each corner the saw makes a 6 inch dia. turn to complete the rectangular hole. :)

Of course we're all anxious, we haven't had winter since 04-05. It's been at least spring since then. Even worse for me, I won't be able to make it out this weekend.
I'd like to see one of those ice saws in action. How thick can the ice be and they'd still work??
Still working on that mouse flavored paint.

Was out that way yesterday, hardly any ice, what there was, was maybe an inch thick, and not very far out.
