Went to selfridge this afternoon and there was nothing going on there at all. only caught a few small ones. Talked to a ton of people and they were having no luck either. I talked to the DNR girl that was checking fish and she said nobody caught anything all day. The ice was only about 3-4 inches and i was only out a little ways. Water clarity was bad too, only about 6 inches of visability. Now i'm trying to figure out where the heck to go in the am.

I'm a member of that club now..
I was going to SANG tommorow, but it doesn't sound too promising with the weather and no :fish: hanging out anywhere in the bay.
Might be a good day to get some projects done. Thanks for the report.

I talked to a guy coming off the at the dnr ramp in fair haven. He said he was fishing from9:00 to 12:00 caught his limit, but none were over 6 inches
I fished in the algonac harbor club from 1:30 till 4:00, the only thing I got was a stiff back!!!

I had the same luck at Selfridge also. Caught very few, the largest 8 inches. Careful out there. A 4 wheeler went in this afternoon. Looks like they put boards up around the hole to protect others.

I was out at SANG also no luck just a few dinks. The ice under the snow all over out htere is thin. If you walk with your spud you will see you can punch thru in most areas in the middle of the snow. I wonder how many will go thru tomorrow. Good Luck.

with the fresh snow covering everything up tomorrow I tend to agree with salmonslammer...good day to get a few things done around the house....hopefully get a call from work to plow and get a little overtime!! :) more money for more fishing goodies!

 Why is the ice so "shotty" at SANG?? It always seemed like they got good ice before any where else.

Ice at sang and anywhere else is going to vary at anytime depending on wind speed and direction.Hope this helps you understand.

With so many weed beds around the SANG area leting off heat all day it takes awhile for it to firm up once the bay has capped over the wind will only help things around there as long as it's not from the west. Gas pockets in that bay also theres always one in the canal on the way out right in the middle. PLEASE BE CAREFUL we don't need another winter of 98 with people going thur. everywhere. Did I say GAS POCKETS.

I think there are thin spots because the ice formed on Monday night, I was by there Monday afternoon and there was open water. I heard it was froze on Tuesday and Tuesday night it snowed. Sticking in a few places and that is were the ice is thin any where it is clear it is 4.5 to 6" of perfect hard ice. I think the ice didn't have enough time to get hard before some of it was covered up by snow, which really slows down ice making. I walked across some snow but twice on the way out and once on the way in I broke thru with one hit of the spud. I'll be out tommorow. Good Luck

:yeahthat: that is the main reason. Snow on ice is bad.

LOL,, I didn't know there wasn't "any" ice there on Monday,, that could explain things a lil' too. LOL

last winter up at houghton we only had a little over a foot of ice because of the snow depth on it!! It insulated it and did not allow it to get any thicker! Are usual amount is around 24-30 inches

SANG to Salt River has always had many gas pockets (last 20yrs i recall) lots of weed beds in the area cuase this, couple with some snow on the ice...only makes it worse.
Bring a spud and poke around...never assume in that area.
be safe

Fished Selfridge yesterday. Water was very dirty, could only see a foot or so. I fished toward the base from the DNR launch. I was about 100 yards from shore in front of the picnic pravillion just south of the blue shed. I set up around 8:30 and picked up some really nice fish. Ended up keeping 40 with 25 over 7 inches. I had 4 that were over 9 inches and 2 that were 10 and 10.75! Fished to a little after 5:00 and called it a day. I did lose my best lure to a 30 inch plus pike! I did not have the spear tied because the water was so dirty. I did see the brute once before he took my lure and bobber! I lure I lost war a 3/4 inch chartruse colored Russian spoon. I also lost a brand new Ken's lure when it bounced out of my hand into the hole! Most of the fish were caught with a mousie, but I did get 10 or so on minnows. A DNR guy was checking fish in the parking lot. Most of the guys were not doing too good. It's a good thing it was a slow day!
There was around 5 inches of ice and a couple of guys were running out on 4 wheelers. The DNR guy said one of the guys went through the ice. He got out OK and he did manage to get the 4 wheeler out with the help of some friends.
