Went to higgins lake this morning (Sunday 1-16-2005). I went to the northern bait shop (not sure of the name) picked up some minnows. I had purchased waxies amd spikes the day before. On the advice of the baitshop guy I went out at Hillsdale (SP) Rd. by the small park. Fished in 25 ft of water up to 60 feet and drilled about 2 dozen holes. Caught about 30-40 perch....Only they were all 3-7 inches with the most being 4-5 inch range. Lost one 13 or 14 incher in 30 ft of water as it became tangled in my vex transducer. The fish seemed to want a glow hali with a waxie till good light and then a small chartruese glow jammin jig tipped with either a minnow or a waxi. I also caught two on a small plastic crayfish, About six on power bait grubs and 5 or 6 on a guster hook with a red lure jensen anise egg.

Ps always cool your portable heater before you put it into your rover :yikes: . Mine was still hot and burned / melted my tacke box and started a small fire (not good). :bash: Ice was 4-6 inches as far as I ventured out (about 1/2 to 3/4 mile and walking was very easy with the use of spikes).

Hope this was informative.

Sean, once the ice gets a bit thicker, I should have plenty of info for you.

Why thicker? Well the north basin opened up with that last warm up. The south basin is fishable though with 5-6 inches of ice and not alot of snowcap. As cold as it is right now, the north basin will freeze up fast if it didn't already yesterday.

Once it gets thicker, all my fishing buddies will be out and I will get weekly reports and spots to go to (lakers, whitefish, perch). I'll try to keep you updated if you can make the drive up and you are not too busy.

I start my new job Tuesday. I also heard about the new dog from your dad. Very cool ... I better start shopping for my new O/U. I might keep my Hyde now too.

Keep in touch.

Trying to get a north end ice report today. South end has plenty of ice for snowmobiles/ATV. Perch are small and plentiful--great place to take kids if just catching fish and staying busy with small perch. Also heard some laker reports as well that sounded pretty good. Smeltville should pop up this weekend as well, not sure if the smelt will cooperate but the shanties will be there. It was somewhere around -15 to -7 this morning up here.

February 19th is the fishing contest. Held at the DNR West End Landing on the north side of Higgins. Kids Divisions for perch(12 and under), perch and trout(13-17 year old) and adult division for perch, trout, and whitefish. Around $1000.00 in prizes(working on more!) All you need is a Winterfest badge to enter if your 18 and older, kids are free to enter! All fish must be entered by 2pm. More info. in the next coming weeks. Plan on coming up for that weekend.
