look what i found on the DNR's weekly reports:

While on patrol, CO Joel Lundberg observed a light down by a stream. Upon investigation, he found a homemade hatchery set up and two dead salmon in the stream. He developed a suspect and, during the interview, discovered that the individual had caught a male and a female salmon and then artificially inseminated the eggs. A ticket was issued and the introduction of salmon into the upper AuSable River system above Mio was halted

Holy crap:yikes:

I wonder what part of the stream this was....thanks for sharing Jeremy

BTW, nice brown in your pic. I take that was recent. You didn't happened to fish wish Jon did ya? He mentioned something about ice fishing when I talked to him this week.

What? You don't want to catch salmon in the Holy Waters! I highly doubt any would have survived living in Mio impoundment.

I saw that one too. I was to post it here, but you were one step ahead of me.

Instead, this guy should be hired by the DNR.

THose salmon probably would've migrated downriver to the big lake, but would've stood a good chance of surviving.

The funny thing is, I've thought about that very same thing lately, and I'd do the same thing with steelhead if I had access to a creek or stream that flowed into a great lakes trib. You're promoting natural reproduction--what's wrong with that? The DNR adjusts fish plants based on natural reproduction, so we might as well do what we can to help it along, right?

Instead, this guy should be hired by the DNR.

Yep, Maybe he's finally realized that if we want to see larger plants, we'll just have to do it ourselves! Too bad he didn't get ahold of a male and female skamania! ;)

I don't think they could have because of the dams which would block there movement downstream.

You'd be amazed at what those fish can do. In the St. Joe river they'll plant fish way up near Mishawaka and South Bend. Those planted fish have to go over at least four dams in order to get downstream to the big lake. Same thing with the Grand, they'll plant fish in Lansing. Fish ladders usually only go one way and the vast majority of fish will either go through flood gates or the turbines on their way down river. Tough little buggers, and somehow they git-r-done.

Quite an intersting conception idea this guy had.

On the same report page of interest
Over the holiday, CO Steve Lockwood encountered a reckless snowmobiler on Secord Lake. While CO Lockwood stopped to check a group of anglers, a newer performance snowmobile raced past him at a high rate of speed. Comments were made by the onlookers that the operator of the sled would probably be found in a wreck up the river. Later, CO Lockwood found the sled tipped over and the operator was lying on the ice complaining of chest injuries. As CO Lockwood helped the operator to right his sled and began to discuss the operator's excessive speed along with the fact that he had no registration, the operator jumped on his sled and fled the scene. A 12-mile pursuit ensued up the river, through yards and down roads, until CO Lockwood was finally able to overtake the operator and arrest him. The subject was lodged in the Gladwin County jail on numerous charges after being examined and released from the local hospital. People I just cant believe the things they attempt

No, that's me--most people think I'm a dead ringer for a young Sean Connery! ;) I'm a big James bond fan, so it seemed appropriate to put a bond pic up as an avatar. Eventually I'll change it to Roger Moore, then Pierce Brosnan, etc. No Lazenby or Dalton though...they sucked. :)

Eh, that last avatar pic got irritating--made me look like a teenager (I'm 35)

I know that CO Lockwood fellow.
Nice to hear he's enjoying his job :)
In fact he was the person who told me where I could buy my hunting dog.

TC,

I don't think those salmon could get past the dams on the au sable. They are large dams (similar to tippy). There are no fish ladders either. My guess is the fish would migrate downstream to Mio dam pond. I doubt it stays cool enough for them in the summer but there would be nice spawning ground upstream in some of the feeder creeks.

Strange story.

I am really curious as to the exact nature of the ticket issued...did it relate somehow to illegal possesion of the fish? Or was it more like a littering offense due to whatever structure the "hatchery" was made of? Or was it related to some law involving planting or attempting to introduce a species?

It would be interesting to know what aspect of the case caused the concern...
