View Full Version : Flourocarbon Lines
What is everyones favorite Flourocarbon line to use for ice fishing? I'm thinking about getting some in 2lb. I was looking at the P-Line FloroClear. It has a flourocarbon coating, supposedly. Does it look like flourocarbon underwater?

I use Berkley Vanish, 2lb, on 4 of my rods. Good stuff!

2lb. Hi Vis Stren with 2 lb. VANISH Leader Material on the business end.
On another forum a few people was saying that the Vanish was 'fraying' at the knot.. Has this happened to anyone?

I guess for smaller critters it would be ok. In my experience being flourocarbon lines don't stretch (at all) it breaks too easily from a hard strike even before the pole has a chance to flex.

I use the same setup as Dave and Ed Stringer.Ed, Dave or ScottyH, Why the use of "Hi-Vis"? Is there an advantage? Are you guy's using noodle rods, spring bobbers or a slip bobber? Also, do you attach your leader with a barrel swivel, blood knot or ??? Thanks in advance for sharing your "secrets"! ;)

I'm kinda wondering the same thing as Burksee,,, whats the purpose of a leader when pan fishing???

tightlining, line-watching,...whatever you want to call it. hi -vis helps to see the line movement. no spring bobbers.
big bluegills didn't get that big by biting a lure hanging from a yellow line (or a line with a swivel) (also swivels kill your action and sensitivity)......so that's the purpose of an invisible leader. I'm using 2-2 right now but soon will be time to use 2-1. I have other rods with springs for running straight 1lb, or 3/4lb.
hi-vis -> double uni-knot -> 1-2lb leader
the double uni gives you a point to attach a dropper fly if desired......many many more ways to acheive this same setup...some better than mine no doubt. blood knot and other knots work too....i just find the double uni easy to tie.

Arin:
I run 3# P-line below 4# Hi-Vis Gold with favorable results on specs while using jiggin' raps and pimples.
I've also used 2# Vanish with equal results.
I use the Hi-Vis gold more for being able to see any tangles or clusters that happen to my line more than for the fine art of tight lining. The fluorocarbon is to reduce the fish's ability to see it....I run fairly long six foot leaders too.
I join the lines with a blood knot and have a very small ring ( not sure the real name but used for attaching flies) to facilitate changing lures in the cold, wind and in the dark. That set-up works well for me.
Hope that helps.
What do you mean a small ring? A loop in the line?

i think he means a quick clip. :yeahthat: -you can find them at most bait & tackle shops. Here's a link to see what they look like.

They can be a bugger once your hands get cold or your like me and seem to have ten thumbs when trying to use these.
They don't spook the fish at all?

No they don't spook the fish. They are almost too small to work with if your eyes are like mine. That is what we use on St. Clair when you can't figure out what th eperch are biting.

They don't spook the fish at all?Dont believe so, Much less than a snap swivel anyways. I've caught fish using these on my line. In some case's I believe they enhance the action of the jig or lure, by using this device the hook/lure/jig is not tied tight to the line enabling it to move more freely.

Given the combination of my ten thumbs, bad eye's and fassnaps; People will either relate and laugh there a** off or because they cant figure out what I'm do'in get the :coco:  look, pack up and move far away from me!

There are days when they do spook fish!!! I'm sure of it.
I try not to use them unless I absolutely know I'm going to be changing lures A LOT. otherwise I'm content retieing. You can tie a loop knot and get the same action on your jigs. All of these things are different from day to day. Sometimes tieing a clinch knot tight to the jig gives your jig a lot of 'kick' when you pound it. I've also heard the fassnaps make a clicking noise under water as you pound.....can be a good thing....can be a bad thing too....

I use em all, love em all: the only variable is the pole.
I use both graphite and noodle-type set ups: usually rig two of each, with 2lb/2lb on both and pair up a noodle with a graphite pole, using one combo of baits and lure with one pair and a different combo with the other. I have found that sometimes the action from a stiff pole makes a difference in triggering fish, sometimes the "give" of the noodle rod keeps the fish from spitting the bait when I am not quick enough to see the line move before the fish feels the rod.
The tiniest quikclip works fine with #12teardrops. I also think they allow a bait to work more freely, than tying directly to the line. If I go to #14 however, I tie directly to the leader because the fish are obviously in a more subtle mood.
Where do you get these at? I was just as BPS and I didnt even see any like that.. Are they at walmart?

I use Fas-snaps for perch fishing, but never for bluegills. I think a more delicate presentation for gills is indicated. Not that it makes a heck of a lot of difference either way. Capnhook

Arin, Meijers has them is Walmart doesn't. The package is usually quite small so you'll miss it if you don't look close.

I'll go to 4 lb. when the jumbies come in around Gino's. Like scottyhover said we are line watchers, when I'm over gills my rod never stops jiggin wheather it's a slow jig or a pounding jig. I use fly clips when ever I can for the fact they make a slight click sound as the jig bounces around, but there are times were I feel it spooks snifers away looks to machanical and go with a loop. Never had the line fray off on the leader material, always wet your line before tying knots. I use Thorne Bro. rods no need for bobbers or anything else to muck up the action just me and the rod. A slight movement of the line and fast tip and hooks set before a bobber even goes down.

Ed stringer, I use the same rods and set up as you do, however one note using a fast snap with the horizonal tear drops is a no-no. I tie them on with a improved clinch knot and reposition the knot after catching or missing a fish to keep the teardrop perfectly horizonal every drop down the hole. :D

Good deal tommy-n can't beat them Thorne Bros. I've using the new Stren ice green line on the gills same great line but the shows up better on cloudy days, all and all I'll stay with my ole yella.

i will have a couple of those rods in hand next year, i can't stand hearing you guys rave about them all season....heard it last year too i guess i just wasn't on top of things!
ps. no fassnaps on a genz bug either, tight clinch not keeps that 45 degree angle, and adjust knots after every fish of course!
