Hey guys. It's my first posting on here but i've been reading for 2 months. I'm from Northern IN and fish SW mich. We are not having a lot of luck in this area for safe ice yet. My lovely wife has suggested we go up north but near a more populated area where my wife and son do not have to spend all day on the ice like I will. lol. We were looking in the Cadillac area or somewhere else. Can you give me some ideas??? I fish for panfish, (bluegill, crappie, and perch). I would seriously appreciate some input. Thanks. :)

Cadillac would be a good choice. I would also recommend Houghton Lake. Lots of stores and such for the wife and son to go to while you are fishing.

Just as an FYI there is a site now for you Indiana folks. It is just taking off but I am sure it will bejust as good as this site.
Here is the link.. http://www.indianasportsman.com/

Good luck.

Cadillac is nice, and there is plenty of shopping, dining, movie theater, etc. If you decide to go there, here's a link to reports:

Ya what is that lake by Cadillac that they do really well for walleye? Lake Mitchell? I think I heard that it might be one of the best inland lake for walleye in the lower.

Lakes Mitchell and Cadillac are actually joined by a canal, so there's LOTS of fishable water! Mitchell used to be great for Walleye, but it has been very slow the last few years. Word was it was on the rebound, but I haven't fished it in a year or so.

Thanks guys. i was looking in at some of the places you mentioned and i think it's a done deal that we may go up to Cadillac and spend some time up there. I guess the ice fishing on lake Mitchell isn't too bad. Of course, some information on exactly HOW good it is would definitely be helpful and any hints about what's biting and what bait is working best would be great too. lol. HEY!!! it's not like i'm asking for the Holy Grail or anything. lol. thanks again.

I fish Lake St Helen and it is hands down the best place for pike numbers (no size limit and the kids love the constant action) through the ice and has walleye, bluegill, crappie and perch. There is less pressure than Houghton and Cadillac/Mitchell. There are plenty of motels in town and you are only 20 minutes from Houghton Lake if you want to head over there. If you want some specifics, PM me.
