I was out on Green Lake last night for the first time and as I was leaving I ran across what seemed like an exceptionally large couple of augered holes. They looked like manhole covers. I measure them against my boot and still had about an extra 1" of space to fill...my boots are 14" across. I've never heard of an auger that large...maybe it's homemade or something, but it's certainly dangerous. Be careful if you're fishing out on Green Lake.

Ive never seen such a thing, but Ive read that water running into a hole from melting snow can "spin" in the hole and enlarge it.

There was a thread on another site which basically said that a hole could enlarge under such conditions to become so wide that an entire "perm" could fall into it.

This MAY explain what you saw.
