I want to try some smelt fishing this Winter. What size and color of hali jig should I buy? They have them in a 50, 35 and a 25 size. Could some of you smelt experts help me out?

We had good luck last winter with the 25's in the blue pattern. We'll see if they do well this year.

We used to have some good smelt fishing on LBDN thru the ice, and Hali's were one of my favorite baits. If you replace the single hook with a small treble, it really increases your hook-ups. Just cut off the single hook with some wire cutters, then add a small split-ring to the bottom of the chain. Put a #14 or #16 treble on the split-ring and your good to go.

When i use hali's for smelt im really not concerend so much with the color. Most of my smelt fishing us done in 30-45 ft of water so i use the size 50 to get them down faster. I also use these for perch and then I will go with the size 35. For the past couple years(except last year) i did really well with any color hali's at higgins lake. I think catching smelt is mostly in the jigging action, not the color of your jig. And to answer your question since i am usually fishing down alittle deeper i like to use the ones that have some silver or gold or are just alittle bit of flash to them. Like i said before, i think that if you find a jigging pattern you will catch a whole lot more fish
