Red circle hooks and how they work. Right after the perch inhales your meal, they turn away while "crushing" or killing it's grocerys. It's that turn they make that is critical. That circle hook slides back through the perch mouth to the angle change of the lip. Then Bingo!!! he's hooked. This is why you don't have to set the hook, just lift the rod or reel in line slowly until the fight begins. I started using them in 2003 for the wife cuz she kepted loosing fish cuz she wont set the hook, she jumps on that reel and cranks like crazy.

I almost forgot the great Catch and Release value of these hooks. Because circle hooks wrap around the perch lip, the is exposed for easy removal. Everyday "J" style hooks tend to hook much further in the perch mouth making the release harder or even killing a juvenile. Give them a try their great with the kids or the little darlin.

Is Red Circle a brand, or just a particularly shaped red coloredhook?
Where can I find them?

Red Circle is not a brand. Circle is a shape of hook. Red is the color.

OK - found them thru a brief internet search. Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with the sizing. What does a 10/0, 12/0, etc mean? I doubt that any stores near me have this type of thing, so I'd have to order them.
10/0 and 12/0 means you are looking at saltwater hooks. Those are some BIG hooks.
Never used a circle hook smaller than a 1/0 but that would be too big for ice fishing perch. They make a #8 circle hook?

I went to Bass Pro at lunch and couldn't find any type of circle hook in #8 size. I looked through the catalog also at different manufacturers. Smallest was #6 so I got a pack of those. They had maybe 6 packs of red #6's.

Lawnboy,
Thanks, thats a great picture. Just about answered all my questions. But since looking at your rig it's got me thinking of a few more.
Is that your own rig make up? Thats pretty heavy (lb.) looking line! Is it manditory to snell the hook to get the correct action? I'm a terrible snell tyer. And I'm assuming the barrel/crane swivel it to reduce line twist?
Notmuchtime - I was BPS in Auburn Hills at lunch today as well. Didnt know about this "Circle" hook thing before I went or I'da looked for them as well. I bought some Gamakatsu "Split Shot/Drop Shot" hooks, size 4 in red! They kinda resemble a circle hook, they were out of size 6's, no 8's even mentioned. These style Gama's look small for fours, I didn't want to go to small, I want those fish to see the red! I'll have to wait and see.
Thanks again!

My good buddy is a tackle rep and he's the one who gave them to me before they it the market. I think that Daiichi makes them now not sure. Good luck with them boys and girls and I'll have more cutting edge stuff as the season sets in.
