I experienced my highest level of Pucker Factor tonight on Rose Lake in Osceola County. Two buddies and I ventured out, the only ones on the ice, and popped a couple of holes along the way. Both times we measured about 4 inches of ice so we proceeded confidently. Then about 2/3 of the way down the lake we started getting a LOT of cracking... At first we thought it was just a spot where water had pooled on the ice and then froze, and we were just breaking through the skim. But when one of the guys hit it with the spud, SPLUSH! Right through! Only a little over an inch of ice! Meanwhile, as I stood there watching the ice spider out around me, I v e r y s l o w l y backed up, shanty in tow... Not sure if there was a spring there or what, but it was the only spot like that we encountered. Meanwhile, caught a few Crappie, including a nice 13 incher.

Good way to get yourself killed man. Ain't no fish worth dyin over. If your the only ones on the ice, that's a pretty good indication it ain't quite there yet.
Be carefull ...............

I was just going say something like that.Kinda like a 13" fish that couldnt wait to be caught is worth drowning over?People never learn no matter how much you warn them about the dangers of thin ice.

Just for the record - we did put down a few "test" holes on the way out, and each time the ice was at least 4 inches... So it's not like we were just wandering out there like a bunch of idiots..

You guys were smart to do your test holes. I think the only real bad move was jamming down the spud when you heard the cracking. Not good to poke a hole in a surface that is already cracking under your weight.
Congratulations on the nice fish. From the looks of the weather, I think we may get to fish first ice three or four times this year.

Just because there was no one out there does not mean anything, alot of lakes I fish I don't see anyone all day when the ice is plenty safe. :D

Glad everyone made it ok...You found a spring or real tall weedbed either way be careful and enjoy the fruit of your labor. Nice fish! I recomend a vest with a self inflating life jacket on contact with water, cabelas has a real good one.

That's part of the risk that we take....I've gone from 8" to 1" on Higgens chasing the bows in the shallows. Nobody ever plans on F...up.
