There are really no set depths for any of these fish. I have caught them all in depths ranging from 3 feet to 60 feet. And a lot of time the fish will be suspended at different depths. For example last Monday I was catching bluegills a foot off of bottom in 23' of water. The very next day the blugills were suspended anywhere from 6 feet under the ice to 4 feet from bottom in the same exact spot. The best thing I can tell you is to get a Vex and you should be set. Good luck!

I also have a Vex, which eliminates the need to know that. But heres a tip that I posted in another thread,,, if you have a spinning reel or actually another type of reel,,, put on a jig and lay your pole on the counter or table with the jig laying on the floor with your line tight and make one complete turn of the handle then measure EXACTLY how far one turn brings your jig up off the floor. You'll be flat out AMAZED at how far it comes up, especially a good spinning reel. Then take a sharpie and write how many inches on the handle of the rod. I have 2 reels that take in 19" on one turn. I always thought when,, some one said,, "ya, just crank it up just off the bottom", that meant a few inches,,, a crank or two could mean 2 to 3 feet with some reels.

Depends if you have a full spool or not.

Full spool???
I was kinda assuming he had enough line to reach the bottom.

Full spool will change it all but not much depending on the reel you have, because the more line you have the more it has to travel to loop around the other line compared to a bare reel which will travel less to complete a full loop.

I allways trust my vex to tell me what depth to fish

Diameter of a empty spool (where you tie the line on) versus a full spool (outside diameter of spool line capacity) could be the difference of 1" to over 1' per crank depending on amount of line and size of line ( lb test) on the spool.

LMAO!!!! I get it now! With the micro-spinning reels you won't see that much of a difference.

Deputy865,
Nobody's going to call you stupid, because you're smart enough to ask questions!! A "Vex" is short for a sonar unit, or fishfinder, that is really named VEXILAR. That is the company that produces them. The most popular models are the FL-8, and the FL-18. They are flasher units, not LCR like Hummingbird, or Lowrance. Search the word VEXILAR on this search option on this forum and you can read all night. Good Luck- Capnhook

Mr. Deputy, please don't think that you have to go out and spend 300/400$$ on the latest toys to go fishing. I use an old Lowrance Fish Lo-K-Tor LPF-150. It's an old flasher system with no flashing colored lights[not that I could see the colors anyway]. But it shows me the bottom and suspended fish just like Vex 8/18's do. But if ya got to buy the Best[at least for now], go with the vex 18.
