Hi michigan-sportsmans,

I am not the worlds best fisherman, but my biggest catch was a 10lb blue cat in Lake Dalas in Tx at 3am during a drizzling rain. I would like to hear from personal experince from everyone on this subject.

What type of weather and time was it when you caught your biggest fish in a river, lake or stream.

All my best freshwater lake fish have come when a front is bearing down upon us, lightning in the distance, winds picking up. You know, when you should be pulling the rods and running for port, not fishing. :yikes:

Yep! There was lightning in the area when I caught my biggest fish also. I really believe, after fishing all these years and catching smaller fish and one day there is lightning and a drizzling rain and I catch my biggest fish might not be a mere coincidence.

I remember lightning flashing and thunder pounding and seeing a water moccasin with a head as big as my hand :yikes: trying to come into our flat bottom boat and my oar persuaded him not to! :bash:

Mr. River Boy:

Welcome to the sight. You'll get some good info here.

I guess it depends on where you're fishing and what you're fishing for. In the fall I salmon fish at a pier south-west of Ikaluktutiak. My personal best was a 27 pounder that took me 45 minutes to net, although I've heard of some 35 pounders being taken there. Night time is the best, with the hour before sunrise "The Withching Hour". Sometimes they hit all night long, sometimes the bite is on for an hour (pick one). Sometimes a cold front moving in is the ticket, sometimes a nice quiet cloudless night with a full moon does the trick.

Luna Pier is a good place for walleye, also in the fall, also at night. The bite varies, sunset til 10:00 works good early on, but as the water gets colder they tend to bite at any time. They just want to fatten up for the winter.

If you don't mind crowds, the Maumee River in Ohio is a great place for walleye in the spring. But there are parts of the river where that have a sun rise to sun set rule, and the guys pull a LOT of walleye out of there.

Good Luck.
