Was out last week, and got barely enough keepers for a meal. Most were dinks, and kept only six fish. One was an 11 incher and saw a couple more in the hole that size, but no luck. Alot of little walleye in the 6 inch or so range off palmer rd. Wish they're parents were around :) Only fished in one spot about 1 1/2 foot of water through 4 inches of ice, from about 3 p.m. till dark. Looking to get back up there this wed. morning or afternoon depending on work.

WALLEYE EX--Now that is what I call a stringer of perch! Did you steak those bad boys or fillet um'? Either way all I want is an invite to the fish fry.LOL With half the state talking about Palmer my plans are to be as far away as possible from there. My son and I might try Augres or Twas. Will need to see what kind of report I can pull. Be safe not sorry out there.DC

3 of us fished out of the Pine River yesterday. 3 1/2 hours and about 20 perch between us. Biggest was about 6 inches. Same water as Palmer Rd.
On a brighter note, I fished out of Erickson Road today. Got to 10 ft of water and caught 3 walleye (all keepers) and a carp. Marked 8 fish and caught 4 of them.
The 2 guys I fished with yesterday went to Tawas today and got nadda.

Marking 8 and catching 4 is already a way better average than last winter. I had one day that I had 24 fish come in, look around and leave. I was ready to pull the final 26 hairs I have left out of my head.

and we caught a nice 12 inch perch. It came in with three other big perch. We fished Palmer road last Sunday morning and caught nothing but small perch and seen a bunch of nice walleye in the hole. We decided to head out walleye fishing tonight after my brother gave reports of catching some walleye and we ended up with 4 in the box between two of us. We were in about 10 feet of water and 6 inches of ice, no slush on the way out there but that should change tomorrow. I am going to try fishing early (6 am) for walleye in the morning. I will report back to ya guys if anything goes.

Was going to go to palmer for some perch, but walleye might be even better :) No machine, have to walk. How far to about 10' of water?

Ralph.
10 FOW and how far out to walk to get to it, would vary depending on exactly what road, and in some cases, what direction you struck off from it.
There are three distinct ledges that run paralell and along the entire Western shoreline of Saginw Bay. These ledges gradually come closer to the shore as they run South towards the extreme SW corner of the Bay near Kilarny Beach and State Park.
If you were to walk out let's say from Newburg, Coggins, Erickson or Kitchen roads, you would have to go out about 2 miles to get to 10 FOW. If you went straight out from Linwood, Boutell or Parish roads, a little over 1 mile would get you into 10 FOW or more, depending on whether you didn't find yourself on one of the shallower fingers that jut out into this ledge in this particular area.
Always keep your eye on the wind direction whenever you go out from this western shoreline. And take special notice of any cracks you cross. Large ice burg heaves at cracks don't scare me as much as the ones with crushed or broken shards along the crack. This indicates that the ice is shifting or has shifted recently. So it has little holding it together with the stuff anchored on shore. Not trying to scare you here, just passing on some stuff I've learned through experience and the hard way.

Reminds me of 2 years ago on saginaw Bay. We were fishing in our shanty and My Brother N law kept looking up, then he would go back to fishing while we were Bsing. Then He perks his ears up and says "I hear water running". His brother and I were laughing at him and at that instance the Ice broke away and the Cracked through the middle of our shanty. We all jumped out of the shanty and pushed it to the shore side of the crack. Then we had to jump across 2 feet of open water to get to the shore side. It is funny now but it was a little unnerving when it was happening. :tdo12:

I don't think I would go to 10 ft of water after todays warmer weather.
I went out of Erickson straight out about 90 degrees. About 1.2 miles out is a preassure crack. Some folks were crossing it, but I opted not to. If the ice was a foot and a half thick I would of, but being 5-6 inches I didn't cross it. At the crack, if you go North 3/4 mile you will end up in 5-6 feet of water. If you follow the crack South 3/4 mile to a refroze East-West crack you will be in about 10.5 feet of water. That is where I was yesterday. I was on a quad. The ice was clear and firm.
But for the record, I am not saying that the ice is good. I don't want to feel responsible if something bad were to happen to someone who reads these reports with the warm weather and all.

the cutter went through bay city again, and on the news they said there are a few cutters out on the bay because 1 or 2 more freighters are coming in. Who needs that much Pea Gravy?

With the SW winds predicted to be 20 to 30 MPH the next couple of days, those cutters might make enough space to let the whole shelf move somewhat. But in reality, only the immediate area around where a cutter goes through gets effected once the ice has firmly set up. Hopefully we have enough ice right now, to deviate the winds effect on it the next couple of days. If it holds, the added moisture from the rain will actually seal the deal if freezing temps return. I'd hate to start over at this juncture.

and caught one 23 incher. The ice actually seem to hold up good today except for one slush spot that you could go around on shore, otherwise the snow is still there but heavy and wet for snowmobiles. I actually got a good perch report today of some keepers, its amazing, a buddy of mine went out and caught 40 nice perch in four foot of water. Can't tell the exact spot thoughhttp://www.icefishingmichigan.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif If anyone is getting any nice walleye, drop a note.

Maybe you could drop a note on the perch action.

Consider that we have probably (I'm guessing here) about 10,000 members on this site, and only about 30 or 40 I've become used to seeing post on a couple different boards. I could never figure out rather it was simply the covert nature of fishing itself, or the need to be the one who gets to rub in their success to the less fortunate.
It may even be the Prime-evil instinct we've retained, when what you harvested and where, had to be kept strictly secrtet for the tribes survival sake. :tdo12: I believe the word "survival" itself, changed to the present day word of "greedy", once we got a higher spot on the food chain scale, and started speaking the same language.
Don't get me wrong, I love being the guy with the heavier cooler at the dock. But 8 times out of 10 it's because I was in a better spot, or running the right program for that day. Skill only applies when the entire playing field is level.

Hey jamie, take a gander at ausable on your way by, thinking of doing some spawn drifting maybe sunday. With all this warm weather and run off, should be good. I know this is the wrong forum, but since your heading that way  The saginaw River hear in bay city may be ready for boats again soon by the looks of it :yikes:

Alright, I will tell ya the secret place. It's off Bordeau Road in between White's Beach and the marina. There really isn't much of an access point there unless you know somebody, there use to be a place to drive but I believe they have put posts there, but some people still sneak through there, your best best would to be go off the marina and way to the right. The walleye we have been catching are off Rashotte Road. I don't know how good the ice is, won't be accessible with snowmobile due to there being no snow left. The rain didn't do much but I don't think the 45+ temps sure aren't helping.

Well, thanks you angler.
You've taken the second, and possibly the hardest step in the MichiganSportsman.com recovery program.
The first step of course, was admitting you had a problem.
I don't think anybody here, expects you to give GPS coordinates to the same two holes you fished in. And info as vague as "Off Ericson road in 4 FOW" should be pleanty enough for anybody. :grouphug:
The roaming nature of fish themselves, dictates that one spot is hot one day, and two miles down the beach the next. :D
Seriously.....Thanks.

I live out on the bay just south of White's Beach and I could actually see the freighter way out in the channel. Didn't see too much open water except for the normal crack that is out 3 or 4 miles every year, seemed like she was open. Hopefully the cold weather comes back.

Fished the Bay Friday morning. We went out off of Linwood Rd. The ice was still pretty good close, but went out to the second crack and it was THIN!:yikes: We could hear it start to crack, soooo.. we just kind of walked back in. Caught a few perch around 5". Every one was moving and so were the fish. Just to hard to find em. Cool thing was you really didn't have to drill holes. You could drop your lure right down these holes that had water running through them. They were eveywhere. Hope fully the weather will cool back down soon or we'll be starting all over.
