Well it looks like Tuesday will be my first and probably last time for a while to ice fish this year. Will probably be taking my two boys. Any tips on where the fish are biting would be appreciated. Would like to meet up with some people from the site if possible.

Steve,
If you want to keep the boys busy try Kent. Lots of 6" perch and gills in the deep hole by West launch. Must have caught 100 today, but only about a dozen keepers. 5-6" of ice, so no problen there. Did talk to a guy who lost a nice walleye at dusk.

How big were the keeper perch that you took home?

Open to just about anything except the Big lake as I'll have the boys with me and I don't think the ice is safe out there. Want to keep the boys busy with some fish as well as try out my new vex.

Most were around 7 /12 but so far and few in between I didn't keep anything. Nothing big. Best bite was in 35' of water right off the bottom. Did see a couple schools of fish come through higher, but couldn't get anything to bite. Bigger fish were all on minnows, smaller fish on glow teardrop with spikes and waxies. Didn't have to rebait as much with spikes. Fished from 8am till 5pm.

For sure your vex will get a work out at Stoney with all the gills (north lake). Got lots of pike too. Going there with a buddy this morning. First time out this year, been too busy lately.

Can anybody point me to a good map of Kent lake showing the drop off area? The map on the DNR site is almost unreadable as far as the depths go.

Steve, if you can get to a Gander Mtn. store (others may also sell the book) Sportsmans Connection has a good set of maps. Lower Michigan is broke down to 5 regions. Get the southeast region. Doesn't have all the lakes but a good number of the popular ones. Also available on CD. www.sportsmansconnection.com

If I had a way to scan one and fax it to you i would.

Steve,
If you can get that CD, get it! I love it! That's a dandy, with like 900 lake all over the lower penn. You and print them, and take them along, or even print a portion of a lake when you want better definition. IMHO Capnhook

Steve,
You can get one at the park office. Not great, but a little better than the DNR map.

I got a decent copy of the map and can now see where the hole(s) are. Looks like Kent it is going to be. Me and the boys will be out there around noonish would be my guess. You know what the shanty looks like so come say hi if you are out there. My guess is we'll be sorting dinks but it should keep the boys busy.

By far the most thorough publication detailing tactics, stockings, and survey results of anything I've have ever read...About $22 but worth twice that with all that info... ;)

From the website so far I think it's only myself but that could change.

I'll be there in the morning until about 10 am, then I have a dentist appointment. As of now, I will be there with at least 1 of my boys. We will be in a black Shappell shanty. It sounds like the place to start is somewhere off the pier then off the West launch area.

I have to work today but I'll try to make it out for the evening. Looks doubtful though.

Howdy, Steve-

I've got to work, or I'd stop out. Kensington is now right in my backyard....

skunked again. I was there with my 5 yr old boy from about 8:30 till 10:15 and never got one bite. We were fishing in the area near the west launch off the pier where everyone is talking about and where is was 30 ft deep (if have and eagle fisheasy 2, it didn't show any fish, but we tried in those spots anyways, because that's where people said there was at least small bluegills and perch. I used small jigs with waxies and tried with a minnow as well, but no luck. I have now been to Lake Fenton twice and now Kent, and still haven't even got a bite. I am getting a little frustrated. we'll keep trying though.

You need to drill a few holes and find the deep part of the basin at about 35' and fish right off the bottom. As it gets on towards dusk start to move shallower towards the little island by the pier. You need to drill alot of holes and if you don't mark fish, move!

Believe me when I find the 35' mark it's going in my GPS.
