Was shopping in saginaw this morning. Saw some guys out there. I have an itch to go but need some ice conditions first. Anyone have any reports?? Does the ship ruin the shelf ice and everything? Seems like last year we just fished on the edge. Thanks for the info

percheye,
I've fished the river in the winter for over 15 years now. My best advice is to stay off it right now. The cutter was running from Carlton towards Bay City today. Opened the channel up pretty good which means a big boat is going to follow. I would not trust the shelf ice. Some may be fishable, but most will not be. After seeing the cutter at the Z bridge I drove the length of the river through Saginaw. Saw several area that had some slush (not a good sign), and a couple of areas that weren't ice covered yet. There was one open spot about 50 yds north of were the Titabawasse and the Cass flow into the Saginaw River just south of Wicks Park. I won't be fishing the river anytime soon after what I saw today.

The ice is about 2 1/2 inches ........The ship did break up the ice in the chanel.
Current fairly strong......visibility about two feet. The snow pack will exert pressure and water will seep on ice.
Didn't catch anything.......INEXPERIENCED ANGLERS, STAY OFF YET !
Merry Christmas !

Hate to be the messenger of bad news, but the forecast for next week is not encouraging for ice fishing. Temps above freezing from Tuesday on. 43 degrees and possible rain for Saturday. Glad I didn't put the winter cover on the sled, cause I may just be casting or troling again by New Years. :yikes:

Couldn't stay away.........fished a coupla hours.
Ice about three inches in clear spots ,less under snow pack.
Small fish still rule......bite was slower this afternoon.
Still not recomending inexperienced anglers to go on ice in the River.

Percheye............the ice on the Saginaw River is not all the same......You could have four inches in one spot and ten feet further, open water under the snow.
My night fishing is rather limited.......and haven't done to well on ice.
I was fishing near Chamookman's spot.near the straight away. on the west side.
