I tried to fish Hamlin Lake near Ludington yesterday 23rd of Dec. I saw 2 guys on the ice but when I tried to get out I found the ice was not very thick. It only took one chop with a not to shape spud to break though. The problem is too much snow on the ice. I'm going to try again next monday.

Checked the State Campsite access on the s/e Side of the Pond Across from Big Bend Launch. Ice is soft at the boat launch. Out 25 yards the Ice is clear and good. But only from 2 inches in spots to 6 in others. I didn't go out any farther than approx. 100 yards from shore.
Then went down to Reynolds Landing (just up from Oxbow Park). Ice is again soft around the docks and there is a inch or two of open water around them.
Once you are away from the Docks the Ice is 5-7 inches where I checked out 25-50 yards. It seemed the farther out you went the thinner it got. At approx. 150 yards out I checked and had 5 inches on one spot, two feet away from that my spud went thru on the first Light chop. My knees started shaking and I turned towards shore at that point. It will be open water in some spots if we get the rain tonight and the 47 degree temps. tomorrow.
Finished checking Ice by running up to Parkers Landing. (M-20). Some were fishing off the docks at the new facilities. Ice was 5-7 inches at the docks. According to the boys there The ice gets thin fast as you head towards the middle of the River. Again, I suspect the middle of the River will be open tomorrow.

Fished Clifford Lake yesterday afternoon.
4-6 inches of good ice straight north of the launch out 1/4 mile. The SE part of the lake that stays open the longest during freeze up only had about 2 inches in a couple of spots I checked.

Gun lake fishing has been good just about everything. Had a chance to go out on a sunday morning around 5:30 and cleaned house on specs. When i went home i looked at the calender and noticed there was a new moon so maybe moon phases ARE the key to better fishing with wind coming from the west. Bluegill fishing has been a little disapointing but the crappies have kept a smile on my face.:)

Plenty of good ice on the Bay right now. Anywhere from 10" at Palmer Rd. area to 7" 2.5 miles out of Linwood Rd. ALWAYS check your ice on your own accord for safety sake. IF you go out off of Linwood Rd., approx. 10 degrees to the north off Linwood Rd. line, 1/2 mile out there is an OPEN area of water from an ARGO swimming around on Saturday evening. BE AWARE of this. Not sure whether the Argo broke through, or if he found a soft spot. First time visitors, suggest checking it out in the daylight before your maiden voyage.

Crooked Lake (Clare county) had excellent ice over the weekend (12-16 inches). Although I caught nothing, several pike in the 30 inch range (largest being 36") were caught by others.

I'm planning on going out onto Saginaw Bay Friday and Saturday. Can anyone give me ice conditions? This will be my first time out this year. Thanks
