Dad says that was his deer

http://www.freep.com/sports/outdoors/outcol-bar117e_20041217.htm

Larry Elkins of West Bloomfield spent a lot of time Thursday explaining to friends how a picture of his 13-year-old son, Collin, appeared in the Free Press as one of the people who shot their first deer during the firearms season.

"Collin didn't kill the deer. I did," Larry Elkins said. "But we took a picture of him with it, and his mother thought it would be cute to send it in to the paper as a surprise for his birthday. He just turned 14 Tuesday, and she didn't know you had to be 14 to get a firearms license."

The Free Press received numerous calls and e-mails from readers wondering how someone could shoot a deer at 13. The Free Press didn't notice the age discrepancy.

The picture shows Collin with an eight-point buck. The youngster also is holding a shotgun, which his dad said was a mistake to include in the picture.

"It's a misunderstanding," the father said. "I'm sorry for the trouble this caused."

Lots of children pose with their parents or friends deer.
Sometimes I have to wonder if the Editors ever ask any questions before publishing a pic in the paper.

"Collin Elkins is pictured here with his fathers deer"
Sorry NO PIC :)

See, it's really easy to get the headline right, maybe I should get a new job :)

Youngsters posing with their parents is fine. This is one small step to gradually get them to partner into the outdoor sports. We see this often on the TV shows. I do not expect the mother to know all the game laws and this is just a miscommunication.

Take them to Ohio no age restriction there. Thats if you feel they are ready that is. I know my son will be doing his first hunt there if they dont change the michigan laws.

Off the topic a bit, but yes, Father does know best. I think any child old enough to hande a firearm should be able to hunt while under their parents direct supervision. By direct supervision, I mean both of them within arms reach of each other with one gun between them.
