Melon and I have the shapells and we just put them next to each other and kinda tuck the doors in as to block the wind. Works great. Only speared 2 times last year (perch), but there was enough height. With 4 to 6 fishermen it would have to be a pretty big shanty.:yikes:

You guys might crindge when I tell you I have modified 2 Shappells for spearing. One was an older model when they came with wood floors. Then last year I did my DX3000. Where the carpet area is I cut a 2x2ft piece out of the floor(the part where the ski's aren't) and reenforced it with 1/4 plywood. I made it so it can be put back in place and used just as normal.
I just got a DX4000 which I am planning on doing the same.
I like to spear pike (sorry Paul) right along with fishing for perch. I can do both with the larger hole. Someime this week I'll try and post a pic.

:yeahthat: :yeahthat: Please do post pics Walleye Mike, as you know (we talked at the M&G) I also just picked up a new Shappell Dx4000, and I am looking to do a very similar mod. But, I am not willing to just get out the saws all and go buck wild on my brand new shanty. If you have a proven method, share the wealth. I would love to see it. Also, have you made any other modifications to your Shappells for spearing, or conveniece sake? I was asking on the main ice forums, but got no replies.

I fishind out of someones plywood shanty, I dont know who, at Genos last year. This thing was huge. It was at least 10'-10' cube, with a 6 1/2' roof. They didnt have it set op for spearing, but had 3 sets of holes drilled, and it could have easily been set up to spear. Sorry I cant help you on the design, as I paid little attention to detail, but I would bet they are going to put it out again this year. Keep an eye out.

thats a realy sweet mod u made there mike. the only problem is that i fish 99.7% of the time w/ my cousin and there would only be room for one in the 3000... i think we might aim for a 12 x 8 or a 15 x 8 wood shack... depending on cost of materials.
mallard tone, does ur buddy build it right on the ice or what im thinkin ill do is build it modular style and peice it together out on the oce.

This year I made one that can be put together out on the ice and also will fit in the bed of a truck, I think it was like 40 bolts to hole it together. I can't remember the dimentions that I made it but it is plenty big enough for 3 people with all their gear.

I think a 15' x 8' you have to get a building permit for......

I made one years ago. 4x6, lagged bolt together out on the ice. Made with 2x2 and 1/4 plywood for less weight dragging out there. The base was 2x4 and 1/2 ply with conduit for runners that were removed. And that was before the portable electric drills came out. Used a rachet. Two could sprear easily.

fishing joe whats that?
so i just got back from doing some visual lay outing in my basement w/ my said mesurments... and all i can say (as well as my wallet) is whoa i was away off! so a 10x 6 would be realy good and a 12 x 5 would be extreamly comfortable! we may go w/ 10 x 5. i stil;l have to colaborate w/ my cousin on this. if i had the money id go 12 x 5... i just want to make sure we have plenty of room for gear and stuff to stay out alllllllllllll day and even alll night if we wanted. i want to be real comfortable here as i love ice fishing almost as much as duckin. who knows, ill let u guys in when we finalise. i mesured my dlx3000 and each fisher is given 3 ft width by like 4 1/2ft or so so i may just use that to figure it out. if so then 4 people is a 12 x 5 to be comfortable.

I once saw a shanty on White lake that was big enough for the card table and chairs inside and each corner had a hole for fishing. It was more of a social club than a shanty.

The thing that really kept the price for me down for me was that I got all the plywood for free so it was pretty cheap.

Here are many good ideas to consider. I found these a couple of weeks back while doing some research on the subject.
