Hi guys......well i am back from elk hunting the season went well and this is a report of what my hunters harvested this year, pictures to follow after i get them developed.....i had three elk hunters this year and they all filled there tags.......they were a bit anxious and didnt wait for the big one but they were all happy......1 hunter harvested a 5X5 on tuesday morning at 11:50 and one harvested a cow on friday evening ....my last hunter the one i figured would be the fussyest took a 5X4 saturday at 4:51 pm because he was geting tired of hunting.....the 5X5 was very plainly a cross with roseavelt elk which got into the herd from the wolverine game haven leting there pened animals loose back in the late 70's ....this animal had a very prominet crown which is charicteristic of the roseavelt elk.....i only saw one bull that was a real nice one but my hunter who has a bad hip couldn't keep up with me walking and developed alot of pain so he had to quit on the stalk.....i had a great time and met a lot of great people.....i also met fdunford who is a member on here we had a nice little chat......he took a small bull.......there was supposed to be a article in the free press on thursday about my hunter Bill Rase and my self and his elk ,it may have been put in fridays paper and i missed it if any of you see it would you please send me the article....pm me and i will tell you how to get a hold of me.....thanks Carl

How in the H*LL do people get drawn for TWO Elk drawings one right after another when ther are those of us who have not been drawn even ONCE?!!
How blatant can they be by putting this into print and BRAG about it!!!! This kind of thing just pisses me off to no end!!
Our ELK Lottery,... or should I say,.. "give away to a favored selected few time after time" need to be seriously overhauled to make it EQUAL for everyone who applies every year!!!
Mr. DNR,... YOU HAVE SOME BIG PROBLEMS when it comes to the system you have set up for Elk hunting in this state and I feel that it's time to step up to the bar and make some much needed changes for EQUALITY in Elk hunting! :bash:

ATLANTA, Mich. -- Jim Mausseth should run out and park himself at the nearest roulette table.
Tuesday marked the second straight year he had beaten huge odds and drawn a permit in the state elk hunt lottery, and it was the second straight year he had gone home with an elk, a cow that dressed out at 405 pounds.

7MM, what are you talking about :confused:Thanks airoh for taking the response in my absence,... ;)
2PawsRiver if you click on that link that was provided in the Big Frank 25 response and read the letter you'll see why.
This is far from the first time I have heard these kinds of stories. I heard and verified one about 4-5 years ago about 2 brothers who had BOTH been drawn in 2 consecutive years and both made kills for both years !!
Now I surely do not mind waiting for my turn,... that is if everyone gets a fair shake in the ordeal. But how in the Hell can they tell everyone who applies for a chance to draw that this method of theirs IS Fair with these types of duplicate drawing results ! :bash:
I wonder what would happen if someone got a list of successful applicants and matched them up to the possibilities of "relations" to those in public offices. What kinds of multipal drawing results percentage wise would come to light to the rest of us?? :16suspect
Just HOW do they REALLY select the lucky few?? :16suspect :16suspect
I personally have been applying for over 20 years with no positive results,... how many more of you out there have similiar stories ??
Just food for thought,.. Something Just IS NOT right in the house of the DNR and it should be corrected !

I've never been on a elk hunt. But I would like to apply. But the more I read, it seems to be pretty unlikely to get a permit here in MI. :(

Hi everyone.....7mag this isnt the first time or the second time this has happened nor will it be the last.....it is how ever suppose to be illegal for someone to apply or draw a tag after haveing recieved a license the year before....as for looking to see if any well to do or person in politics have family members who have drawn you need only to look at xgovernor engler and his family in and around Beal City ,i can name 19 member of his family or freinds from the catholic church who have drawn....i have been trying to get them to change this system for 8 years now but every time i bring it up about it being unfair and easy system to cheat i get told it can't happen or i am full of it......so all i do now is make sure my hunters have the best hunt possible and seeing that i take the older hunters as a rule i have a very enjoyable hunt with them.....so you guys know i have some pics to take before i can get the film developed but i hope to have the pics with in a week....i will also have the results of the hunt some time this next week most likely friday......bye Carl

The way the State lottery is set up your odds are BETTER at least the rules allow you to keep on trying after you win. But,.. with the DNR Elk Lotto after you win you are NOT suppose to apply for another drawing for 10 years (Bull Elk),.... there is a large flaw in the the way people keep on doing so and do not get caught when they do.
Yea,.... the DNR's way pretty much SUCKS!!! :bash:
20 plus years at $4.00 a pop just for me alone. Multiply that by all of the other continuned applicants that have been unsucessful year after year...

Carl,
GREAT JOB!!!!! Thanks for the hunting stories about your hunters. Looking forward to the pics.
7MM Magnum,
I am also P***ED about what was mentioned in the freep article. I drew last year for an antlerless permit, and took a cow. I was told at orientation that I could not apply for another permit until 2005. Starting this year, anyone drawing a cow permit has to wait 10 years before re-applying. Bull, you are done for life. It used to be 10 years. I did not apply this year because of this supposed rule. As far as I'm concerned, I had my hunt of a lifetime for Elk in Michigan. Other sportsman that live in Michigan should be given a fair shake in the lottery also. There was a guy in our camp last year that had drawn his second Bull permit. Said he lived in Michigan, but mentioned he had driver's licenses from Wisconsin and I believe Wyoming, because he has some land in those states, or relatives did WHATEVER!!!!!!! He took his second Michigan Bull on Opening Day Elk Season 2003. Out of the seven guys in camp, he was the one myself, my son, and a friend did not want to see fill his tag. The DNR said the "WEIGHTED" system will take care of the problem, YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!

I was drawn in the 2001 late season for an anterless only tag. At the orientation required of all hunters I was told "if you recieve a bull tag you must wait five years before you start reapplying, and if you recieve an antlerless tag you must wait three years before you start reapplying. So I have been waiting what seems like forever to start applying again and here I read that some guys are getting drawn two years in a row. THAT IS BULLCRAP!!!!!:bash: :bash:
Why doesn't the DNR do something about this? I'm not a law breaker, but if I had known that this wasn't against the law I would have been donating my 4$ for the last four years and hoping on that second prayer. And to those that have never recieved a tag, quit applying now, you'll never get picked, just give up, Please-please-please. It will make me getting picked again that much easier. Just Kidding:lol:  No really, I never thought that I would get picked but low and behold two days before christmas in 2000 a letter shows up informing me that the DNR is holding a late hunt because of the conditions in the first hunts were so terrible the harvest quota was not met. 20 extra tags were released and I hit the perverible lottery. Keep trying guys, next time it might be you, and you will never forget your hunt in a lifetime, believe me.

This is such a joke!!! 40,000+ applicants for 126 tags. A few years ago there was something like 54,000 applicants.
Take a good look at those odds. On average it will take a person over 300 years of applying to finally get picked.
There is no way in hell the DNR should ever allow someone to be picked more than once!!! I don't care if it's a cow a bull or whatever. . . It should be a once in a lifetime opportunity and after that opportunity, you replay it over and over in your mind and you let other hunters have their opportunity.

Hey Carl,
I just checked your recent additions to your photo gallery. Nice pics of your hunters and the Elk they took. GREAT JOB!
When you get the final harvest numbers for the 2004 hunt, please share them with us.
I don't want to bash the DNR, but from my experience up in Elk Country last year, I cannot see where they think there are 900 animals up there. I would think along the line of the 650 number you and other guides have mentioned. At least they have made the Elk Hunt a Mandatory Check for harvested numbers, unlike the deer.
I just hope the DNR does not try to exterminate these fine majestic Elk from this state, like they seem to be trying to do with deer, in certain parts of the state. I'll give them credit with rebuilding the wild turkey population thou, in the entire state.

2 permits is absolute BULL$__t!! I have been donating my money for the last ?? god knows how many years with nothing to show. I know its luck, but once your lucky enough to get one, you should be done for life (given the odds).

Hi guys.......the totals are posted for you to look at on a different thread.....I completely understand your frustration with the dnr on someone drawing more than once.....i have been a thorn in there side for 8 years now and some persistance from me and fellow guides and hunters like your selves we finally got it threw to them how we feel about it.....i will be calling the dnr in gaylord or atlanta today to see what they are going to do about that guy who drew two years in a row when the rules say he had to stay out one year for a cow ,,,how ever now he has to stay out 10 years for a cow and life for a bull ,they would not give us life for a cow.....the only thing we can do is keep leting the NRC commission know how we feel about this because they are the ones who make the recomendations to the dnr......we also need police our own ranks to find out who is poaching these magnificent animals.....we had 6 shot during rifle season again this year that were shot and left to rot they didnt even go up to them to check to see if they were dead.......one was even shot while i was sleeping in my camper right down the road from where my camper was parked just a half mile away....on the friday night before season opened ,he was a freind of one of the guys who was drew to elk hunt what does that tell you about some people.....i will continue to try to get stiffer fines and maybe jail sentences for those who poach our elk and our moose in the Up .....any way guys have a great holiday season and my best wishes to each of you and yours......bye for now Carl

They really ought to make it a points system like a lot of western states use. Every year you apply but don't get drawn you get points and those with more points get more "entries" in the lottery. It doesn't guarantee you'll ever get a tag as the drawing is still random, but it does improve the odds for those that have been trying the longest. I also agree with the idea that it should be 1 elk per lifetime with current herd numbers.

I agree !
The dnr started a weighted system, then stopped after a year, becasue "It was too costly"..It does not seem to be to expensive to do a point system for bear in MI! Maybe they should try that for elk! I have been aquiring points from Maine's moose lottery for 2 years now. I see no reason our DNR can not do the same type system. I have heard all the rumors about friends of people in the State Gov. getting drawn. I never took it seriously and I hate conspiricy theories, but something is up !!!!
The way I understood it is the rule states that if you get a Bull tag you can not apply for another bull tag for life. If you draw a Cow tag then you can not apply for another Cow tag for 10 years, but you can turn around and apply for Bull only the next year. A little loop hole.. If that is true then that is BS and needs to be corrected..NOW!
