Northern Lower Peninsula bobcat trapping season opens Dec. 10

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials today announced the planned 2004 bobcat trapping season will occur in Bobcat Management Units C and D in the Northern Lower Peninsula.

The Ingham County 30th Judicial Circuit Court yesterday denied a request for an injunction to stop the 2004 trapping season in the NLP.

The trapping season in Units C and D opens Dec. 10, 2004, and closes Dec. 20. Bobcat trapping is limited to private lands only in Units C and D, with a bag limit of one bobcat in Units C or D combined. Trappers in Units C and D must use foothold traps only.

Bobcat harvesters must obtain a free bobcat kill tag, available from license vendors or DNR Operations Service Centers, prior to going afield. Harvested animals must also be registered at a DNR office by the furharvester tagging the animal.

Further details on bobcat kill tags, registration requirements and registration office locations are in the 2004 Hunting and Trapping guide, or on the DNR website at www.michigan.gov/dnr.

Trappers are encouraged to telephone registration offices in advance to confirm hours and locations for bobcat registration. DNR Operations Service Centers are open until 7 p.m for furbearer registration on the first Tuesday and third Thursday of each month, through May 3, 2005.
