View Full Version : Mora vs. Laser hand auger?

I have a little expendable income since I placed in the money in my Nascar pool this year and was wondering is there that much of a difference between them.
I've had a Mora 6" for about 20 years now and I can't complain, but then again it's all I know. So I was just wondering if the Laser is that much easier for cutting holes?

I have always used an 8" mora and am making the switch to the 6" laser this year. That extra 2" really takes it out of you after a couple holes. I tried out the 6" Laser last year and it really cuts good but it could have felt so easy to me because I was used to the 8" mora.
What is everyone else's thoughts?

I've got a mora in the garage that you can have.......I hate the POS... I rather bang on ice like a monkey with my spud. I put new blades on it and it still didn't cut.
In all reality, once the ice hits 6" I bust out my chainsaw, but then again I like to force feed them.

I think the Mora suck. About gave me a heartattack trying to drill a hole. Maybe it was just the one I had. But I bought a 4" and 8" Lazer and it goes though the ice like a hot knife through butter. As a matter of fact, after I bought my 8" Lazer my Mora went to the bottom of Lake Simcoe

what many times happen with the mora is the mounts get bent even just the tinyest bit and they are now just paperweights. if you have real sharp blades and the mounts aren't bent, they will cut decent enough. that being said, the blades on the lazers remain sharp for a much longer time than the moras, and really breeze through the ice. That at just by the general construction, the mounts don't get bent on lazers. to me its a big difference, especially if you are cutting quite a few holes. i got a 4" lazer for perch on LSC when i'm not with any of my buddies with a power auger.... that thing just corkscrews through the ice.

6" lazer rips through 16"-18" no problem and I drill 4 holes every time I set up

I've had and used mora's over the years and I have to say the laser is better. I have a 6" laser and it cuts faster and easyer then a mora. I've had my laser for 7 years and its like new I replace the blades once a year.

My Dad and I shared an 8" mora for years. Eventually i bought him a 6" lazer and i took the mora.
I know its not an exact comparison diameter wise but the lazer 6" was UNREAL compared to the mora. It just sank right into the ice like nothin!
its much faster and easier. you can make a hole through a foot of ice in SECONDS. you can drill 4 quick holes before you even feel anything. By then, youre done. The lazer just sinks in, its hard to describe. No downforce is even needed, not that you ever should press down too hard.
Last year i bought an 8" Lazer for dirt cheap after ice season, i cant wait to test it out. Im sure i would be ok with a 6" too, but the bigger hole is a confidence thing for me, to turn a fish, and to make more room for the vex.

I am a little leery about going from a 8" to a 6" hole but I got a great deal on the 6" laser and I couldn't passt it up. If it cuts as good as everyone says it does I will have to drill 2 holes right next to each other, then I have a 12" hole for sight fishing :) and nothing to worry about.

Guys, there is no comparison, the laser is much faster than the mora. At one time the mora was probally one of the fastest, but that has been awhile ago, it's time to change and get with the program. Remember, every inch larger you go in diameter it almost takes twice the effort to turn, for me 6'' is the best all around for panfish. ;)

I agree.
I had the mora. And would have a heart attack drilling holes. I would watch guys with the Laser blast through the ice. So l broke down and bought the laser (6") . Man what a difference. It makes ice fishing much more enjoyable.
My brother-in-law likes to move every 30 minutes or so. Before, I was worn out by 10:00 am. Now with the laser I can last all day. Now that I got the attachment for the cordless drill, I am really looking forward to this season!

I started ice fishing 20yrs ago with a spud. Then i bought a mora took it to lake simcoe still in the box. BIG MISTAKE. cut about 4 holes then could not get it to cut any more. Just spin on top. Bought a lazer 6inch couldnt be happier. I cut hundreds of holes a year. Replace blades first part of season weather need them or not.

OK you guys sold me on it. I'm buying a Lazer. I personally fish for gills %99 of the time and on a average day I'll cut 30-50 holes a day. My friends think I'm crazy because I work so hard to find fish but then again I'm always the one supplying them fish sandwiches after a day of fishing and they just supply the beer ;) which I'm not complaining.
I've been pricing the lazer's and it seems I'll be heading out to Cabela's to pick up one since they are the cheapest I've seen.
Thanks for all the input!!

I had a Mora for ever, several in fact and with 3 kids using them they all got dulled easily or they got bent. Oldest son bought me a lazar and I wouldn't go back. As a gill fisherman I pop allot of holes. The Lazar breezes thru the ice so I don't get pooped out as much.
HL - Dooohhhh!! now you tell us this on THURSDAY! :bash:
Dunham's had them for $60 also. I'm just shopping for a deal now and that
$10 coupon would have been the ticket.
PM if you see that again. :help: Thanks in advance.

Sports Authority is running that coupon every Wed until X-mas. The one I stopped at in Livonia had several 6" on the floor and a couple of 8" also.

I have had an 8 inch Mora forever. I aways keep an extra set of blades in my bucket along with a wrench to change them. A few years ago I bought a 6 inch Lazer as a Christmas present for my brother-in-law, and there is no comparison. The lazer is buddahhhh!
The moral of the story.... I am asking for a six inch lazer for Christmas this year. Ho Ho Ho..... <----<<<

I had a Mora too and it a big let down, I thought I would be buzzing through the ice, but no. It was so bad I would take my spud instead of it. Then I got a Lazer for Christmas a few years ago and I haven't used a spud since. You can move all you want with it and never get tired. :D

And just think, everyone that has the nilsmaster hand auger says it drills way easier than a laser, I wish I had one.

for a six inch 19.99-22.99, depending on where you get them, I fish 3-4 a week all winter and drill 30-80 holes a day and only change them every other year.

On early ice I use my 8 in. lazer. On thick ice I use my 8 in. Jiffy. So what I'm lazy! :)

Sold my Mora years ago with extra blades to a guy at the flea market!(for a couple of bucks) Yes, it was a heart attack maker! Comparing the lazer to the mora, is like edging the sidewalk by hand or usin Jr's power edger! :bash:

Stock up every year on blades at MTA's, they always mark all the ice fishing stuff to go, gotum one year for $5.00 which is very cheap, blades for the lazer can be pricey at best!

A buddy of mine bought a mora. piece of crap. so I bought a 6" Lazer. works like a charm. my pal tossed the mora and just got a lazer. I only use it for early ice then go to my 9" jiffy when the ice gets more then 8" thick.
The lazer will cut the thicker ice but I won't work that hard anymore.one heart attack and by pass surgery is enough to make me slow done on the heavy lifting.

Meijer Thirfty Acres, Your one stop for all your shopping needs!!! I'm not sure if they are still stockin Lazers or not, I'm certain that the Westland store had, two vex's and a camera.(Augers to??) Will check it out, I think Westland has the ice fishin stuff out? I know I got my Lazer (and replacement blades) at the Canton M's, and it may have been a few moons ago! Will report back soon! Got the Vex at the Westland for 50% off two seasons ago, at the end of the ice fishin season!

Laser has my vote. 6" works for me. 5" is small for me and 8" way too big. Every other year I buy replacement blades and it is as good as the first day I bought it. tightlinesyall

I have a 6 inch Lazer and my ice fishing buddy (Wingmaster22) has a 5 inch Lazer. The 5 inch cuts much eaiser and is plenty big enough for anything you can pull through on 2 lb test. If I had to do it all over I'd go with the 5 inch Lazer!

The old (25 years ago) Mora augers worked great. They had an entire cutting head that was one piece and wouldn't bend unless you beat the hell out of them on the ice trying to knock the slush off which BTW will ruin any auger so don't do it. I now have a 6" lazer and it works really well. It's two years old and the blades are still razor sharp and drills through 24" of ice w/o any effort.

Had to chuckle at all the glowing reports on the Lazer and all the negative ones on the Mora. Have had my 6" Mora for at least 25 years, have had to change the blades 3 times in all those years and it cuts through the ice like butter!
That said, obviously, when it comes time to finally put the ol' girl to rest a Lazer will be the replacement.
