View Full Version : T/C omega/Mueller scope...awesome, BUT..
I got freakin scope bashed!(sighting the gun in) First time ever, but I really haven't shot many high powered guns with scopes I guess. It drew blood but isn't bad at all. Just thought I'd share that with ya'll. If anyone can tell me how NOT to let that happen again that would be great :dizzy: :dizzy: . Not really sure what I did wrong. I took 8 shots total to sight it in. First 7 were with a gun vise. Last shot I just wanted to free hand it for fun. In case anyone wants to know I was using 150g T7 pellets and 250g shockwaves...The gun is DEAD ON at 50 and 100 yards....
Whoever told me to return the bushnell banner scope I originally had and get the Mueller, THANKS. I love the Mueller, but that banner did have a 4.5" eye relief compared the the Muellers 3.25".

Did u have it on a rest of somesort. You couldve been like pinched in there and closer to the scope. My dad had this happen. Also you can check if the scope can be adjusted.

Which Meuller? I have found the 2-7x32 to have plenty o' eye relief for it's intended purpose, a shotgun (and therefore sufficient eye relief for a ML also). The 3-9 and the 3-10 have more critical eye relief, but I feel they are overpowered for a ML.
I have the 3-10x44 sport dot. What do you mean 'more critical eye relief'? According to Muellers web page the eye relief on all their scopes is the same....
I used a rest to sight it in(a gun vise type rest) but I got scope bashed when taking the last shot freehand

Get someone to observe from the side as you aim from offhand to see how much eye relief you actually have.Should be about 3 inches. If not, loosen the rings and adjust accordingly. You may have just creeped the stock that one time and everything is ticketyboo.Bet it doesn't happen again.

Well that and those guns kick like crazy. I find myself mentally aware of the recoil and needing to try to position myself at the outer limit of the eye relief.

The major cause of "dotting the eye" is shooting from a bench rest, bent over the rifle, This causes you to not pull the butt tight into the shoulder pocket, and you don't usually hold the forend tight enough, You get a bunch of "muzzle flip" then, always have a grip on the forend and pull the stock back firmly into the pocket, even when shooting freehanded from a rest. If you use the forend to pull the stock tight into the shoulder and keep a good cheek weld to the stock you should not get popped regardless of the eye relief or recoil.

ronf,
Jimboy made a good suggestion, have someone observe you from the side to see how close you actually are when free-handing shooting. Bench resting and free hand shooting are 2 different shooting positons. The 3.25 eye-relief should be plenty but you may find yourself well inside this and may need to move the scope out. Practice shouldering the rifle quickly a few times and see where your actually at.
Another thing that may be a contributing factor is making sure your are tightly cheeking the stock. If your tightly against the cheek rest you'll ride with the recoil and not be stationary while the rifle recoils.
A good example would be to watch MOOD (during the 15 scond sponser segment), you'll see one of the shots I took with a 30-06 with a 180gr round. I probably could of gotten away with an eye-relief of less than 2" because I was cheeking the stock tightly and moving with the recoil.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. I will do as told! One thing I cannot do is adjust the scope till after ML season tho. I don't have easy access to a range. I'll just have to make sure I got my cheek on the stock and hold tight as you all say if mr. deer comes strolling in. I prolly was a little too relaxed when I got scope dotted. I was sitting on the ground with knees bent(using knee as a rest)resting forend elbow on knee. As for being to close to the scope, I'm pretty sure I was at the far end of the eye relief. I made a conscious effort to back off untill my view started to dwindle.

Jimmyboy.. I HOPE it doensn't happen again! I know next time I shoot that thing I'll be wonderin' about it. Gonna take all my effort not to flinch!

ronf, just do as we've suggested. Shoulder your ml a few times as someone is observing your eye relief from your shouldering side. They can tell you how much space you have between your aiming eye and the scope. If you have 2.5-3 inches you'll be good-to-go and doing so will help restore your confidence.I'm sure you'll do just fine. Now get out there and GIT A BIGGIN'!!

ronf, Hey if you are anywhere near midland I have 180 acres you can shoot at. Sorry no hunting though you can sight in no prob.
Pacer- Thanks for the offer on sighting the gun in, but I reign from Southgate, which is about 10min south of Detroit. Midland is about a 2 hour drive for me. We pass thru it on the way to Houghton Lake(folks have a cabin near there). Again, Thanks....
