Hi. Im not sure if im allowed to post a link, but heres a link to my "home" fishing site and a thread which shows my ideas and contraption for a shanty anchoring system. I hope some of you might get a little bit of use or some ideas out of it. Too many pics and typing to do it all again here.

Nothing wrong with either approch, was just showing the different styles.

I saw on iceshany.com an anchor for sale that looked to me to be nothing more than 2 door hinges bolted together. They were the hinges were the ones with one side square(the door side) and the other side elongated and pointed. They bolted the square side together with the pointed sides so they would fall away from each other, kind of like a toggle bolt. They grinded the points sharp to grab the ice. They tied a rope to the square side.
I hope I explained this well enough.

Trailfndr,
you can get those Iceloks at Cabelas..... But they're $25 !
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0023124118235a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder .giftCertificateURL=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Ftemplates%2F giftcertificate%2Fgiftcertificate.jhtml%3Fid%3D000 5586990011a%26podId%3D0005586%26catalogCode%3DIB%2 6navAction%3Djump%26indexId%3D&_D%3A%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberF inder.giftCertificateURL=+&QueryText=iceloks&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.8&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=iceloks&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml
I could make one heck of a lot of the ones I use for $25. :) And I just thought of something. As far as those Iceloks being used as "life spikes" or whatever you want to call them. How are they going to do you any good if they're locked in your hole and attached to your shanty ? I guess they want you to spend ANOTHER $25 and keep them handy for that purpose. Great marketing scheme I guess. :)

That's what I use. But I got 2 soakers from it last year. The holes ice over and you can't see them. In the heat of the moment running to a tipup or after a couple beers you will forget where the anchors are *SPLOOSH* down your foot goes. I need to figure out a cover for them.

I'm sure those anchors would work great but I'll bolt my shanty to the ice before I drill holes and carry all the stuff out. they sell bolts with a (V) cut through the thread section I have 2 holes drilled in the bottom of the shanty. You just screw the bolt into the ice and It's there. Its so easy and the screws can be put in before poping up the shanty. When we take a trip to Simcoe or other lake I'll use lage bolts with a large washer. I screw the whole thing all the way down. It makes me feel better about leaving my shanty up all night. most people don't carry a ratchet on the ice. Kinda makes the whole thing hard to steal.

I also saw the ones on iceshanty and I think I am going to make myself a set. Looks pretty easy 2 door hinges screwed together. Grind the ends down to make them sharp and tie a rope to the end were the hinges are screwed together. Once on the ice drill a hole not all the the way through and drop them down and pull on the rope to secure them. To loosen them just push down on the hinges. I can't wait to try them out.

For me, I'll stick to keeping the shanty "tied" to the quad (or other transport machine, you won't blow it away !), or if walking, tied to my auger handle when drilled into the ice. I sure as heck don't want to have any holes in the tub or base of my shanty for screws/bolts or whatever. They just let in slush, snow as you pull it along. I put wear strips on my tub even to protect it from wearing holes in it !

Whale I put the holes in the up part of the grooves in the bottom of the shanty. I'v had no problems with slush or water. We all do it diffrent. what way is best????

Hear is a non slip idea. when I go out and there is little to no wind and we have that glass smooth ice I keep an old glove with me. Throw it under your shanty where your sitting and it will stop that annoying shanty movement every time you shift your weight or pull in another JUMBO.

someone pointed out a possible major flaw in my anchor system. Mainly, that metal under pressure against ice can bond very strongly to it.
Ive done some experimenting and found that by wrapping teflon tape around areas that contact ice should prevent a significant bond.
Im going to carefully, tightly, and securely wrap teflon tape on the anchor where it meets the ice and give that a shot.
If we ever get any ice down here.

Hardwaterfan,
I've been using my anchors for a couple of seasons at least and have never had a problem with the conduit freezing to the under side of the ice. I just go out once in a while and break the skin of ice forming over the hole. Then when it's time to go, I just untie the anchor rope and hang on to the retrieval line. Let the anchor line loose and the conduit drops away to vertical and I just pull it up through the hole. Never failed me yet.

hmmmm....ok. that sounds good.
i really appreciate all the feedback from you guys with some experience.
i try to learn all i can from you guys. the internet and magazines is really the only place where i can learn anything, cause i dont have any friends or family that ice fishes except for my Dad but he knows exactly what i know.
take care.

Up-north I always have the shanty attached with a hard hitch to either a 4-wheeler or snowmobile so there is no- problem ever with wind.....down here on my trap off the back end i have bolted a 1-ft. piece of ....tow strapping material with a gusset hole on the ice side...simply put your ice anchor through the whole...turn it in and your anchored...no holes in the bottom of shanty and hardly any room for movement because of the short strap!!
