I have moved to Ferndale this yr and have been in MI only two yrs. I fished through the ice a few times last yr around Waterford and cot some small gills and a few crappie but I want to try out LSC. I went to Metro Beach Thanksgiving morning looking for some ducks and realized I'm 20 minutes from possibly good fishing. I read in another post that the docks at metro are good early. Is this for lake perch, gills, walleye or what? I want to get into some lake perch so what do you recommend? I don't have a shanty but will walk a good ways to find fish. I have a lot of small tear drops and some hand tied flies that I used last year.

Thanks for any info on either Metro Beach OR any areas close to Ferndale. I'd be interested in a get together once ice gets here as well. I'll post that response in the other thread

THANKS

The most important thing to remember is the canals on LSC freeze first and are normally loaded with fish until the lake itself freezes up...Metro Beach marinas and back basin: perch and occasional crappies, The canals off the Clinton River: perch, gills and some crappies...The canals north and south of Selfridge: mostly big sunfish and crappies but when the water's up, 1st ice can produce some good perch catches...Perch size in all of these areas are usually a bit smaller than the lake itself, although there are sometimes exceptions...A nice meal of 7 1/2-9" perch are generally the norm on 1st ice with lots of little ones mixed in...Your best chance for some jumbos on 1st ice is in Metro's back basin...Last year's early ice was awesome and simple, teardrops tipped with a minnowhead... ;)

Send me a PM if you desire more info on what Ed called the best fishing in the world... ;)

I too would like to try perch fishing this year on LSC but don't know where to go. I live near Saginaw Bay, but the perch fishing here has been on the decline for a long time. Can you get out with a sled or quad, and where can you access the lake. Are there places you should be cautious of. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Uncle Al, stay tuned to this forum and you will get more than enough info that you are seeking.

Matter of fact go into the threads from last year and read to your hearts content.

as for access, there are accesses at selfridge, metro beach, south river road (harley ensign ramp), crocker ramp, fairhaven, along with a few other odds and ends (some of which are just kinda done, not exactly up to snuff, or the parking situation is so atrocious, its just easier going somewhere else).

as far as quads and sleds, fairhaven and this past year crocker ramp would be your best bets, though you can also use them off of south river road. be careful of pressure cracks that develop and can open up just like saginaw bay. and also if the wind shifts and really starts coming out of the west, be cautious as the ice can, and sometimes will, blow out. there are several airpockets that normally develop off of selfridge, and south river road with the current one must really be careful as to ice thickness.

PLEASE AS A NOTE: WHEN LOADING/UNLOADING and entering the ice with quads, sleds, and cars, be careful, cautious, and smart. be cognicent (sp?) of the ice at the base of the ramp and the foot traffic, etc. last year at a few of the ramps the ice at the base of em were eaten out real bad by people with mechanized modes of transportation and made it less than safe for people on the hoof (me included).

as far as bait/tackle/etc. a simple rod (i have just about every type available, for skinny water that isn't sight fishing i use schooley rods, for deeper water i have been known to use spinning gear, for skinny water sight fishing i use rods without any bobber at all with a little more backbone than usual to give good hooksets and be able to lift fish when speed is the name of the game). i've had good luck with all sorts of lures.... small jigging raps with luhr jensen eggs early, tiny tubes, tear drops, and just tiny trebles with a minnow.

in shallow water, fish can be pretty spooky, a nice dark shanty helps so they can't see ya.

other than that, have fun fellas! catch some for me.

I duck hunt Metro quite often and this year I'm going to fish it but I was wondering where you're referring to when you say "back basin"?

shane that is normaly back marina by the docks, anywhere aorund the island. There is water behind that I'd call the swamps It's real shallow but hold pike and perch with a few speck at first ice. Its also the first place to freez
