My wife just bought me a jacket and bibs set made by columbia. My question is since this is dry clean only how can I make these scent free? Usually I wash all my hunting clothes in Sport wash and then treat them with the included UV killer spray(combo pack), I have seen sprays that say they eliminate 98% of human odor but I have never tried them, and when I looked them up it never mentions if it is effective on wool.
Thanks in advance,

Matt

I wear alot of wool.
If you want it scent free your going to have one heck of a battle.
Wool always has an odor to it, try hanging it outside for a day it might help.

Cant say for sure- but I have goofed and washed my wool clothing before. Luckily it was in cold water cycle and (after I realized it) allowed to drip dry. I would imagine that you could do the same by hand washing it in cold water with your scent/uv detergent...my wife washes some of my wool sweaters by hand using Woolite and has had no adverse effects...

I understand your reluctance to experiment with your new duds...I would have never done it intentionally to mine! I am sure the scent killer spray would have no ill effects as you wouldn't be saturating the garments anyhow.

I just got the exact same suit this year. I might add that after one short year it is my favorite both for it's warmth and it's silence. The Gore Tex suits are nice for rainy days but you better hope for some cover wind.

I don't intend to wash mine unless it really gets soiled bad and I hang it outdoors at all times during deer camp when it is not in use.

grize,

It will be very, very difficult in this day and age to find a drycleaner that keeps his solvent in tip top shape. Try and find the highest quality cleaner in your area and ask him to clear rinse the suit after cleaning. This will remove any residual fatty acid odors (if there are any) and should also remove any UV brightners that were in the detergent. Or simply follow the advice regarding hand washing and drying. Wool shrinks for two reasons one is excess extended heat when wet the other is caused by mechanical action. I won't go into all of the details, but you could machine wash if you use the highest water level, w/ only the suit in the machine and the gentle cycle w/ a very short wash time then reshape after extract and hang or flat dry. Or just do it by hand in the bathtub or some other large container, rinse very good and squeeze water out by hand (do not ring it out) and reshape and dry flat. Just remember to use a hunters detergent and use it sparingly. LESS is better! You could even add some baking soda to the wash bath to help eliminate scent.

I am a scent freak. I wear this same clothing and what I have done in the 3 years I have owned it is never washed or cleaned it :)
I left it to air out as often as possible and keep it in the plastic containers with natural scents (pine in my case) when in storage. I also wear a layer under it. Atleast silk long johns since these will be against my skin and capture and oils exc. Then these are washed after the hunt and air dried outside.
I would say leave it outside for as long as possible and it should be good to go.

I agree with bow hunter brandon. I have the same suit and just put it in a bag with some earth scent and its ready to go the next year. I have washed it and just hang dried it.

how warm is that uninsulated wool jacket? i have a old "walls" coat i have been using for years, but i have heard that wool is as warm as insulated materials. is this true?

Thanks for the tips guys, I've got it hanging outside to air out and when I bring it in I'll put it in a plastic bag till i'm ready to use it, as for the underlayers i'm washing them the same way that I allways do in the sport wash, should be good enough. Looks like i'm going to be able to make it out for muzzy season this year so that will be the first test of this suit

The old Galyans stores now have this suit 50% off as they have been bought by Dicks and will now carry sports jerseys and the like.

Anyway I had the coat and bibs and bought the matching pants today because I liked this suit so much this year. Get em while they last.

Your sarcasm is very understated:lol:

I am disappointed as I always thought Galyans had a pretty nice clothing selection by top tier manufacturers...Dicks doesn't have the same approach!

Nowhere as I just read it converted to a Dick's Store which is located just off I-96 in Novi.
