The most wide-open choke you have. I believe most gun/barrel makers would suggest something like improved cylinder. Personally though, when I did use buckshot, I used a modified choke 28 inch barrel on my Remington 1100 because that was the most wide-open choke barrel I had for that gun. I think the reasoning to using open chokes for buckshot is that because of less constriction, the larger sized shot seems to get less deformed that when using tighter choked barrels.

I've always heard to use modified or full, but don't have any experience with the stuff myself. There was a thread about buckshot not too long ago that would probably answer your question.

You can guess all you want but untill you test a number of loads in a number of different chokes your just spinning your wheels. Every gun is different and the same goes for the numerous loads available. A full choke from one manufacturer may be different from anothers......

Get out there and pattern the gun and find the maximum effective range before attempting to hunt with the stuff.

:yeahthat: You also must consider what you are hunting and how. When hunting grouse I gererally use an improved cylinder (poly-choke). When goose hunting I may go up to X-full for longer range shots, but then I patterned my shotgun a long time ago.

My 11-87 throws buckshot real well with full choke. I now use an extended rifled tube and the slugs shoot excellent but not too good for buckshot. :yikes:

there has always been alot of people who swear against buckshot. claiming that it only ruins meat, or it only mames animals. i for one thought this until i was kinda forced to use it due to a shoulder surgery (not the shoulder that you pull the gun up to.) i could not steady the gun with a scope because it flat out hurt too much! however, i had to get out hunting so i patterned the following setup:

benneli sbe 3.5 inch 26" barrel
3.5" 00 buckshot (winchester supreme)
undertaker turkey choke (extended)
50 to 60 yards of range
24 pack (case) empty of course beer case for a target

well all i can say is that this setup would put at least 15 of the 18 bb's in the emty case every time! i took a buck that year trotting at 50 +- yards and two shots left him laying cleanly and humanely. i would use a slug whenever possible, but in thick cover or on a bloodtrail would not hesitate to pull this setup out.

Yeah thanks guys. I had a deer drive on thanksgiving morning and thought buckshot would be the best in that case. I use a full choke and ended up dropping what was a nice six pt. with about 14in spread but ended up being a 5 pt cause one of the pellets broke a tine off  Opps.

i would start with a full choke and work from there. i bought a choke thats made for buckshot and i get good patterns at 50 yards nice and tight

My buddy dropped a nice 6 point with buck shot. Shot him right in the neck while it ran straight at him. The only thing is the insides look like soup when you gut em!.

If you are really serious about buckshot and utilizing it's full potential, do a search for Nitro Ammunition on the web. I have yet to try their buckshot or tubes for it, but their turkey loads and Rhino choke tubes are unbelievable.

Good luck...

I shoot 3 1/2" 00 buck out of my 11-87 Supermag and get excellent results out to 50 yards using a Pattern Master chock tube. Pattern Master tubes are designed for shooting larger sized shot.

Fordfreak, where do you get 3 1/2" buckshot at??? I have the mossberg 835, which is chambered for 3 1/2, but I've never seen these shells in buckshot, just steel and turkey loads. Who makes it? How many pellets are in it? I might try that during the late doe season this year.

Federal has a 3 1/2 buckshot with 18 BIG OLD PELLETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VERY IMPRESSIVE AT SHORT RANGE!!.............out to 70 yards

FF is right on the money with his advice about the patternmaster xtented choke tube. These chokes were designed to handle the larger shot sizes and throw wickedly good patterns out to 50 , 60 ,even 70 yards. this is the only way to go when using buckshot. You will also have a dynamite choke for turkey hunting and long range pass shooting of waterfowl so it helps justify the cost of this somewhat pricey choke tube. Good luck!!

Where do you get these shells at??? Would Gander Mountain sell these? I know Meijer doesn't.

GrtWhtHntr,

I bought my 3 1/2s at Cabela's. Remington makes them and so does Federal as stated earlier. Im not sure if Gander has them or not. I believe the Federal buckshot pellets are copper plated, which might give better patterns by limiting shot deformation. The Remington buckshot is just plain old lead pellets, 18 of them I might add.
Good luck shooting them in your 835! :tdo12: Im having recoil flashbacks just thinking about patterning my 835 with 3 1/2" buckshot before I bought my autoloader.

Thanks for the info. Thankfully the 835's have some weight to them, but will still leave a mark, that's for sure! Just makes the experience that much more memborable!
