I hunt southern Lake county and I saw two 'yotes opening morning. Didnt want to shoot and take a chance at scareing off a deer. Have been seeing plenty of squirrels up there too.

We have plenty of squirrel in our wood. MY son ans I will be out after muzzle loader season to remove some. I have not seen any coyotes nice bow season down here. I think they hide out with that much scent and noise in the wood.

I sure would have been their on the opener but I started a new job an you no how that goes, so I just decided it will be just squirrels this year, I hunt Hesperia, crystal valley, rothbury, sometimes as far as kalkaska, some of Manistee. I have been lucky this year an hope it does'nt to much to soon. Good Luck an be safe.

I only hunted with a squirrel dog once, when I was a kid and it was a ball.

I don't want to tangent too much, but how do you go about hunting squirrels with dogs?
Seems to me, most of the time the squirrels are either up in a tree already, or take to one quickly. Having a dog doesn't seem like it would help at all.

will see/hear squirrels LONG before a human - my 'mutt' lights up long before I have any idea where one is - and she'll go right to the base of the tree where the little tree rat is hideing :)

You would be supprised if you knew how many squirrels you walk right by that are hiding just on the other side of a big oak tree.
My grandfather had a mini poodle that was a squirrel hunting fool. If you just said the word squirrel he ran around wildly looking for scent!

I have been hunting dogs for squirrels for about 7yrs. the one I have is called a Fiest, he is all business when it comes to squirrels, he hunts with his eyes, ears,an nose, he will road hunt where he trots about 75yrds in front of the truck on two tracks. Theres is a quite a few dogs in Mi. that hunt this way. I always had beagles till most of the land in my area got built up. It's a rush I have always enjoyed. There is a web site SQ Dogs.com check it out.

The dog that i hunted with (once, years ago) would use his eyes, ears, and especially his nose to lead us to bushytails. We would walk through the woods and the dog would work ahead of us, making a large circle. When he came to a good scent he'd follow it to a tree, put his paws up on the trunk and bark. If the squirrel bolted from the tree the dog would run with his head up, eyeing the critter as it bounded through the treetops, leading us to the tree when the squirrel stopped.
It was a huge hoot.
Many dogs, from those bred to hunt squirrels to mutts, have an innate ability to hunt these denizens of the treetops (although many novice squirrel hunters would be surprised at how much time they spend on the ground).

I never was old enough to hunt with my grandfather and his dog, he passed away when I was only 7-8. I just remember send that dog running through the woos next to my gramps cabin in baldwin when i was little. It always made me laugh to see that dog go nuts just by hearing the word squirrel!!

The best bushy tail dog I ever had was a poodle mut!
Schipperkes, which are Belgian barge dogs (ratters) make great squirrel and bunny dogs. They are very intelligent too. I would have one except I can't stand their incessant yapping and demanding attention, besides, I'm already married.;)
