We are tenatively planning an outing with our Boy Scout troop on Lk St. Clair on Jan 22, ice permitting. To make this more enjoyable for the boys it would be good if all could find space in a shanty somewhere. I'm wondering if anyone rents shantys either permanent or portable on the lake during this time.

Off hand I don't know of any places that rent shanties. But if you'd like, I'd be more than willing to loan you mine for a weekend. It's only a one man flip style but heck it's better than nothing. :) I don't use it that much and doubt that I'll use it much this season. As time draws closer you can let me know.

I don't understand why baitshops all over Anchor Bay aren't doing the rentals anymore...Bluewater Bait in Fairhaven was the last I remember, but I think that was discontinued...Not sure though. Someone from up there let us know...I do know their phone# is (586) 725-1448...Maybe if enough express interest, maybe they'll get it goin' again... ;)

As far as I know, no one rents anymore. Blue Water was the last.

My shanty and Ice equipment will also be available to you for this venture. If I can swing it, I will be make myself, truck and a 4wheeler available to get all the shanties to the lake and out on the ice. I'll even offer up a couple of bucks for Mr Pollman to come out and drill holes, IF he promises to not put the $1.00 a hole sign on his back.;)

I see no one has mentioned the Jimmy's old bait shop for a possibility. I do believe the shop was re-opened possibly by new owners and if memory serves me (most of the time not) Jimmy's used to rent shanties. Might have been a long time ago but I could have sworn I remember blue shanties with Jimmy's name on them years back.
I also have a portable 2man shanty that you can use and if you also need some extra help with the troop, setting up, fishing techniques, tackle ext. ext. I'd be happy to join you and the kids for a day of fishing fun. :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish: :fish:
Quick edit, I too have a power auger for drilling. (No charge :) )

Didn't Tip's in Fair Haven rent out shanties that he already had set up?
Where are you planning on fishing? I have a minute-man shanty. If there isn't safe ice on the lake, the canal behind my house is usually good for a limit of gills and crappie. If there is ice on the lake, I usually do very well on perch in front of my house on Anchor Bay as well. <----<<<

Steve sounds like you have lots of help. I have a 4 man that is easy to pull with out snow. I also have a 3 man ,ect. Go figure I'll prob be fishing that day also. ;) I'm thinking we hook 4 or 5 of the little guys togehter and have a fine shanty pulling machine :p If they are real small I'll bring my 8 or 10 kid harness out
All kidding aside, the equipment is open. The time off will depend on the higher power. (her name is Marie) keep us updated. Its a little early to say for sure.

Steve, with all the offers you getting from all of the GREAT people on the site you might want to think about putting a form out to include a site outing along with the troop outing. We could do maybe a combo day and have a fish-off or something. My offer still stand for the shanty and assistance with the kids just let all of us know closer to the proposed date for the troop outing that we're a go. Looking forward to it :)

Sounds like that might be the best idea. Combine a troop outing with a website outing. That'll be sure to get them into some fish.

Don't know if I'd go as fare to say "sure to get them into some fish" location, weather and time of year will determine that but rest assured, there will be plenty of us out scooting and searching for fish   at the first chance to get on the pond.

yea you also will want to pick the safest ice for the kids. If we have a bad year the metro boat basen is good . lots of fish small but kids don't care. It sounds like we could get enough shelters to keep all warm and happy. How many kids?

We don't know yet as it's a ways off. I doubt if it would be more than 10 that would actually come.

Steve,
I am a newbie to ice-fishing this year, but I have a clam 5600, buddy heater, and all the trimmings, and would be happy to join in on helping some scouts to ice fish, heck they might even be able to teach me a few things! ;)
