We have all done it. Left the hair on our antlers to be delt with later, then forgot about them and had them dry up to be hard as a rock. I was just wondering how or what the easiest way you have found to remove the unwanted hair is?
Thanks, Hacksaw

If it's to the point that the skin has started to curl on the edges I would pull off as much as possible with a pair of pliers. Be careful not to pull too hard, don't want to break anything. After that I'd boil it. Boiling is the only way I have ever tried. Takes a little time and a lot of scraping but it will come off.
If there's another way I would like to know also.

Boiling is great, but stinks the house up!!!!
If it is really dry, pull off what you can. Being careful not to break something you don't want to. Once the hair is off, you can take some sand paper and sand off all the skin and fat and stuff. It should be really dry to do this and be sure not to sand through the skull. Granted it will take a lot of sanding to go through the skull. Go to a very fine grit once you get most of the skin off and finish the bone. It will leave a nice smooth finish with some of the bone pattern still in tack.
the key is to not sand too hard or too deep as to ruin the look of the bone...if you want to keep the skull bone showing, that is.

I recently had a set that sat for two years with some hair along the base of the Horns. I boiled them outside on my grill for about 30 minutes. Then I scraped the skin off the cap with a razor and pulled the hair out with some pliers. Boiling is the way to go.
If you are married make sure you ask your wife which pan is acceptable to boil them in. I made that mistake and cost me a whole new set.
Good luck.

Hacksaw,
Otis has it right, boiling is the best way to go.
I use an old pot and do it when the wife will not be home for a few hours, the smell is pretty bad.
But it will definitely clean off the hair.

Hey, guys........
If you do need to boil those antlers in the house, chop up some celery (just throw in big pieces) and cook it in the water with the skull....... Helps keep the smell tolerable.. One more thing. . . . be sure to keep the antlers themselves out of the water while boiling, just the skull should be under water.
Good luck...... ~ m ~

If anyone shows up at the outing with soup with celery in it I'm going to be a little leery. :D Looking forward to meeting you all.
