Do the 3" shoot better in your gun? I've only heard of a few guns that seem to like these better than the standard 2 3/4". If thats the case I feel for your shoulder!! :help: The performance benefit is slight, not enough to endure the extra cost of the slugs and the extra recoil.

i'm not judging; only asking. why shoot the 3"ers isn't that a little too much punishment for your shoulder? i have shot winchester partition golds 2 3/4"ers since they came out and man o man are those things accurate and devistating. they hurt to sight in but worth it as almost every deer i have shot with them seemed to get knocked over sideways and 5 feet back! so i guess i am just wondering if 3"ers are worth the pain?

How far are you from Knutson's ? They have a huge variety of slug's. I shoot 3 in. as well and picked up a few box's from them and shot today. The Breneke KO's in 3 inch shoot great out of my gun .

This thread reminds me of an article that I read back in some gun mag comparing recoil of guns.

A 3 1/2 inch turkey load that everyone shoots, has 6lbs more recoil than a .458 winchester mag. (If I remember right.)

It seems like heavy shotgun loads are definately hard hitting, moreso that I think people give them credit for.

I just like the 3"ers. They shoot great out of my gun. It's a winchester 1300 rifled slug barrel. I've shot guns all my life and 3" dosnt bother me at all. I'm not a real big guy. 155 lbs and 5' 8". Yea, they kick some but nuthing like a 3 1/2 00 buck shot. Heck I wish they made a 3 1/2" slug.
I thought everyone shot 3". Oh well 2 3/4 will have to do.

Is that just a "rumor" about the 3" slugs, shooting bad???? I haven't shot a slug in a while but I just bought some 3" slugs, in case of a long shot. I also bought some 3" 000BUCK and some 3.5 00BUCK. I'm kinda dreading having to pattern these shells.

Does anyone know if "anyone" makes a 3.5" 000BUCK???

What do you use a matress for a recoil pad? LOL

I prefer the 2 3/4's . The 3's just don't group like the 2 3/4's. Out of my 1187 at least. Sighting in at 50 yards all 2 3/4' s would group with 2" of bulleye. The 3's didn't even hit my target. I gave up on them after that.

I just cant belive this. 3" are not bad at all. After reading the replies I wonder if people shooting the 3's are just jerking the gun because of the anticipation of the shot. I can group 3" at 50 touching each other. They shoot great out of my gun. But so do the 2 3/4. If it wasnt for the kick would you shoot 3"'s?

I'm with Fred Bear on this one, 3" shoots great out of my gun. They've never bothered me much at all, and I've been shooting them since I was 15. I'm not that big either and the recoil isn't unberable, hold it tight and squeeze 'er off.

I shoot 3" also (Brenike Gold's). They don't bother me anymore than a 3 1/2" goose load. Sighting in can tenderize your shoulder a little bit, but What slug doesn't? A shot or two at a deer has never been a problem. They shoot great out of my gun.

I also shoot 3" brenneke's 1 3/8 oz slugs. They shoot great out of my gun. I have a Mossberg 695? I believe it is. It's the bolt action slug gun. Anyhow, they group nicely out of it and put a hell of a hole in the deer.

I'm not saying they are bad, just asking if they shoot good in your set up. I've never had a 3" slug, both the cheap foster slugs or any 3" sabots for that matter shoot good in any of my guns.
FB, are you using the plain old foster style slugs or are you using Sabots?

I am kinda on the larger side of the spectrum, and I think those 3 inchers kick like a mule. I shot mine on Saturday and couldn't believe how hard they smacked. I'd rather shoot a box my .06 rounds clad in only a tank top than shoot that thing again.

Shot some 2 3/4 and 3" slugs yesterday, 28 to be exact. OUCH! Not bad today :) 2 3/4" patterned much better for me and didnt hurt as much :) I HOPE to not notice it when I shoot a deer Monday!!

That's why I buy mine any time of the year, when I see them on sale. Organized my hunting gear last night. I have 10 boxes of 3" slugs and 5 boxes of 3" 00 buck. And I thought I only had a box of each.
3" Mags shoot a lot better out of my Remington 870, than the 2 3/4".
One question though, does shooting buckshot out of a rifled barrel, does it screw up the rifling?

Swamp Monster

If it's the standard lead buckshot, it won't screw up the barrel, but your accuracy will be horrible! The shot cup "should" expand at the shot due to the heat and will spin with the rifling somewhat and send your shot spinning as well. If you haven't patterend it, you'd better. It's really a waste in a rifled barrel honestly.

BTW, some buckshot loads are not in a shot cup....they may spin as well but will be pretty deformed....again accuracy will be lousy. The soft lead will not hurt your rifling, but it will foul the barrel fast. I wouldn't shoot the hevi shot stuff or any of the plated buckshot just to be safe but they shouldn't do any damage as well.

I've got a mossberg 695, tried the 3" slugs not anywhere near as accurate as the 2 3/4 inch federal slugs I am using now. At 75 yards I am keeping 2" groups and I am not getting kicked in the shoulder quite as much.

Fred Bear - have you tried Bob's in Hastings he usually has plenty of ammo on hand (269) 945-4106. I know it's a treck but thoght I would offer some help.

I have better groups with 3" Federal Sabots out of my Bennelli slug gun than any other brand. Recoil does not bother me, all those years of football made me imune to pain ;)

How much difference is there between a 2 3/4 and 3" slug at 25 yards? How big of a difference in damage is there between rifled, not, and sabots at 25 yards??

Swamp Monster

Typicaly at the muzzle there is a couple hundred fps difference, but the deer don't seem to care. In foster style slugs this equates to about 1" to 1.5" flatter trajectory at 100 yards when sighted in the same. In the field this is pretty much meaningless because most folks can't call their shots within an inch or two at that distance under field conditions...looks good on paper though. The foster style 3" slugs do have an energy advantage at those extended ranges, but under 75 yards, both the 2 3/4" and 3" have plenty of muscle. In sabots, your not going to gain much. The big shells are sometimes faster and shoot a bit flatter. Todays high velocity 2 3/4" slugs can carry the mail out well past 150 yards to the 200 yard mark in the right gun...the big 3's are not going top extend that much if any. And at closer ranges each develop more than enough energy to dispatch any deer you'll ever run into. The only reason to go to a 3" sabot realisticly, is if they shoot good in your gun, thats the most important thing. Ansd since every gun will have a preferance, they are worth testing.
