$30,000 research elk shot near Hesperus
The carcass of a bull elk used to research chronic wasting disease and valued at $30,000 was found Monday afternoon at the San Juan Basin Research Center, located five miles south of Hesperus.
"The goal of the research is to develop a viable strain that is resistant to chronic wasting disease," said Barry Dyar, the research director of the Cervid Research and Recovery Institute. "He's the best bull we've had, and there's no other bull in that strain."
